Trileptal for rapid BZD detox

Posted by tensor on February 27, 2013, at 10:30:02

Has anyone here used Trileptal for rapid BZD detox? I know it has been used. Does it work for anxiety?

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18821451

Thanks.

Hi Tensor-

I did about four years ago. I was coming off of about 4 mg of Klonopin. (Something like that.) It was extremely helpful; I did it in a detox inpatient unit over about 6 weeks. I can't remember the dose, but over two months, with Lexapro (20mg) and Phenobarbital as a prn, it was very successful.

I have to mention, I don't believe in slow tapers with benzos; I've been through too many to count--many inpatient. A rapid detox is hardly successful for longterm users.

One suggestion would be to have your pdoc detox you using Valium as the benzo to taper with (the dosing is very precise) over a few months (depending on what dose you're detoxing from). He can give you the Trileptal (small doses are best for detox purposes) and go from there.

Don't pressure yuorself to go too fast--you'll feel better if you take the necessary time.

Good luck,

b

Good site; if it's the Ashton method, it's the way to go.

I was detoxed inpatient about 6 or 7 times over a period of 3 years in my mid 30s. Not fun. I don't believe in short benzo detoxes--they just don't work for longterm users.

I think when I used Trileptal I started at 300mg twice daily then they tapered that down to 150 twice daily, and so on.

Another (very out of the box route, but effective) way to go is to use Valium as a taper and have your doctor prescribe Suboxone (typically used for opiate withdrawal) to help ease off the benzos.

It was VERY effective for me at one point.

Best,

I'm aware of them. I have always thought they were too long but I realize now (after failed attempts) they are the way to go. Thanks.

I think sodium phenobarbitone might be more suitable for a rapid benzo detox, carbamazepine wasnt found to be helpful in this situation, and as its so closely related to trileptal, I'd be doubtfull.

Using Phenobarbitone/phenbarbital, you start off at a reasobnably high dose and taper over 7-10 days, as you would in alcohol withdrawl.

What are some reasons that would necessitate a "rapid" benzo detox?

Good question. Unless there's some major adverse medical reaction happening, there shouldn't be a rapid detox for benzos (in my opinion).

Trileptal worsened my anxiety.
