Lyrica, Depression and pain

Posted by Fondafilm on February 6, 2013, at 9:52:23

Hi, I have to admit that I have only read the initial post regarding Lyrica. I am amazed that one could tolerate high doses of it. I took 200mg for 4 months and the pain and swelling in my joints was intolerable. That said, I titrated off very gradually and became depressed and my osteoarthritis was so painful I would cry at times. Plus, I could not sleep more than a few hours a night. Not knowing what to do I started up on Lyrica at 25mg in the evening. My depression lifted almost immediately and the OA was almost painless. I have noticed that some mornings I awaken with pretty intense pain and stiffness and on those days I take 25mg in the morning and 25mg that evening and am good to go for another few days. I can only conclude for now that this is a good way for me to proceed until I learn otherwise. Thanks for the posts I will read the others.

I didn't think so at first but now I can say my OA is lots less painful. Stairs are still rough but standing and walking are good. The OA med being pushed is Cymbalta, which I don't want to take. As much as I want an anti- inflammatory, they haven't worked well for me unless I take enormous doses. I can't say it will work for you but might be worth a try.

In rereading I see you mention swelling are you sure it's not rheumatoid arthritis. Most common with swelling although some I've heard have swelling with OA. I took cymbalta 60mg with benzos for three months. No side effects other than didn't have any back pain. But at the time I didn't know I had back pain. I found out when went off the cymbalta. So I tried it again about a year later but a different pdoc I didn't like or trust. He wanted me to go from 30mg to 120mg of cymbalta in a month. Hence couldn't even tolerate 30mg. I was a mess of anxiety. So went off it. Shows how trust also effects the way a med works. Lyrica never tried. Phillipa

I should have mentioned that I do have OA in my knee. I had been on various antidepressants also, and like you, had no idea I had OA. I really dislike some docs who are looking at dosages which are recommended by the pharmaceutical company and have zero to do with an individuals metabolism etc. I have had Serotonin Syndrome twice and refuse to take an SSRI, SNRI or NSRI. Also, I have found that I do better on small doses of a lot of meds. Who can say how long my current situation will last. Have you tried some of the prescription NSAIDS? They are pricey but good and contain stomach protection now. Only if they work for you.
