I've felt powerless over weight gain on Seroquel, Lithium, etc. I also have the worst diet in the world and it's been like that forever.
I haven't been going to fast food joints and just this week thought, maybe I should read labels closer and see the max of sodium I should have a day. 1500mg for my age. One level teaspoon of salt has 2300mg of sodium. Is it mg?
I live, up till now, on frozen dinners. Packed with sodium and sugar. I haven't weighed myself but already I'm not bloated, I feel like I've lost ten pounds and I look like I have.
At my age, any age, this stuff is my enemy and I can't afford high blood pressue from sodium or all of the nasty side effects of sugar, type 2, etc.
One thing I do right is eat a lot of oatmeal, I love cinnamon so that's all I put on it.
If I drink soda it's coke zero, very low in sodium.
This is a big wake up call for me and frankly I'm proud of myself. I'm trying and that's all that counts. When I drop a few pounds I know that exercise will begin. Right now that's hard for me.
It's never too late, babblers. It's never too late.

I love steel cut oats. It takes longer to prepare than rolled oats, but it's so, so tasty with cinnamon and brown sugar or honey.

Phil no canned foods at all high in sodium. I'm not sure but have you checked the healthy diet frozen dinners, weight watchers? I know it's hard I always have low sodium on blood draws. I was brought up with never using salt and meat and potatoes. Now it's chicken half baked potato, and organic green beans. Have to careful at salad bars also as sodium I think is used as one of preservatives or is added to the protein. Cheese is high I think in sodium too. Fruits are good. Congrats on changing your diet!!!! Phillipa

No brown sugar, very little honey. The store I went to didn't have Lean Cuisine. I think they are better but I want to cut salt and sugar way down. My BP was 141/86 without Adderall.
AAP's have wrecked my body. How hard is it for a doctor to say weight yourself once a week and if your weight starts going up we'll have to try something else. If you don't know that you can blimp out before you know it.
Onward through the fog.

This is great to hear,Phil! Do you like green tea? I so look forward to my morning cup. And exercise is essential,I believe, for your mental health. You can change your life, day by day, keep moving and choosing the right foods!

I looked at two Lean Cuisine meals in my freezer. 530mg sodium and 580mg sodium. No food in a box, can, bag etc seems to be safe.
I used to run and bike a lot. I have a recumbent exercise bike now that I used a lot but really having trouble restarting. I'm playing my drums though and throughout my life it always starts with the drums. I'm on the right track.
When 50 pounds sneaks up on you exercise has a whole new meaning. I have a tibia fibular sprain on my left lower leg, a problem that didn't go away after physical therapy. I can walk 50 feet and the pain is excruciating. It's all I can do to walk back to where I started. All of the PT's and the owner got together just to figure out what I had.
Town Lake hike and bike trail where I used to run is 5 minutes from me. That was my favorite thing to do, walk or jog. That's gone now. The trail goes right by the Stevie statue. Beautiful place. I was up to 11 miles while smoking 2 packs a day. lol

You are right, Phil! It is never too late! I've absolutely got to eat better too. It's gonna be easier now, well as long as I stay on my current therapy of Ritalin and Tegretol. We all know Ritalin can curb the appetite, but Tegretol! Anorexia is listed as one of it's side effects, and I can attest to that fact! Now I just have to be sure that what I DO eat is healthy. Luckily hubby likes to cook..lentils for tonight...so maybe between my new med and my health-conscious hubby I can lose weight and get healthier and avoid the dreaded diabetes! Good luck to all!

Im the healthy eater in our family. My hubby whines all the time about "no sweets in the house". Well, when I shop, I completely avoid the chips, pop, and cookies sections. I bought him hot chocolate,so he drinks that at night with milk for his sweet tooth. And he always agrees that we need to eat healthy, but then tries to sabotage me at night. We'd be running out to mcdonalds everynight after dinner if he had his way!

sadly, i'm guilty of the 'body by mcdonalds' look. I swear, I only go for the one buck large diet coke, but I always end up getting cookies too...but today, with my new med on board, I didn't even feel like eating them :D

When I was on zoloft and remeron,I really ate badly. I had dessert everynight, and sweets during the day. I realized I needed to get serious about my weight when I didnt want to see family over the holidays 2yrs ago due to my weight. I promply tapered zoloft then remeron. I lost my cravings, and really stepped up exercise. I went from 175 to 140lbs.If Im fat,Im miserable,so I figured Id do ok without the antidepressants. I was relieved that the klonopin seems to be all I need, and doesnt affect my weight.

Yeah, I'm in Austin and everyone is settling here. Frankly it's ruined the town it used to be. A lot move out when summer hits. 100 days of +100 heat is more than they bargained for.
I'm considering getting out because in the 20 years I've lived here it has just exploded with growth. In the early 70's this was nirvana. The hill country and hundreds of swimming holes, Lake Travis are great. Otherwise it's just turning into another shithole like Houston or Dallas. It pisses me off but there's nothing you can do. Traffic wise, due to poor planning, it's one of the worst cities in the nation.
When I switched to Seroquel IR from XR because of cost my doc said don't trust your body about when to eat. Easier said than done. I think that Seroquel works but overweight, close to diabetes, triglycerides through the roof, high blood pressure. Never in my life have I had any of this sh*t. All of this to stop mania which was the most fun I've ever had. F*ck*ng bizarre.
I'm getting grouchy..tired.

Join in the movement to NC. Seems the North and South are both moving here. And eat fresh and whole foods. Fruits, and raw veggies dip the veggies in yes cottage cheese for protein. What I used to do and it worked well. Phillipa

Wow, this post takes me back. I was on Remeron for six weeks, and I gained over a pound a day, without changing my diet in any way whatsoever. My doctor told me it was impossible, but what, I made it up? I stopped taking the drug, and it took me over a year to get the weight off. And I had to buy new clothes to manage the different sizes of my waist during this time.
I'm pretty sure this was the last time I let my doctor prescribe me an antidepressant. If they're not going to listen to you when you tell them what happens to you, then fark them.

Amen Lar...I told my doctor I was having sexual SE from the combo I'm on. He looked at me with a 'that can't be happening' look.

I gained weight from most AAP's though I ate normally and actually exercised more (since they really stopped my depression). I gained 2-3 pounds a week on every one I tried except geodon, which didn't help me at all. My p-doc was very concerned and didn't make me feel like I was lying about how much I ate/exercised. He had seen it before and he talked to other doctors and drug reps about it. AAPs worked so well for me. It was a shame I couldn't tolerate them. It took me almost two years to lose the weight on gained on trial after trail of AAPs. But I did lose it, finally.
This is the end of the thread.
