Ketamine infusions in Chicago

Posted by MrAnderson on January 11, 2013, at 14:22:47

I recently went to Mayo Clinic and they suggested I try a ketamine infusion for depression. I live in Chicago so I'm looking for one in the area.

I've found a few anesthesiologists that do ketamine infusions for pain, I'm not sure if they also use it for depression treatment. Does anyone have the names of anesthesiologists in the area that do depression treatment? Thanks!

Try calling your local anesthesiologists to see if they would consider giving ketamine infusions for depression. Dr. David Feifel at UCSD Medical Center gives his depression patients two or three ketamine infusions a week for two or three weeks.

You could try to enroll in a clinical trial for multiple infusions of ketamine for depression. They're conducting the trials all over the country, including Chicago, although I'd imagine that some of the trials are over and some have yet to begin. Also, there's a good chance that you'd receive a placebo instead of ketamine. To read details from a participant in the Chicago trial, go to post number 130 at this site:

if there is no risk of respiratory depression. they cost a lot of money, is this some means of delegating the delivery of this on-patent treatment using an off-patent drug to a practice that commands even more money than most mds so there is more money for investors to skim?

The dose used for depression is quite a bit lower than the dose used for anesthesia, so there's no need for an anesthesiologist. It would be nice if people could go to a GP for a shot of ketamine. Dr. Edward Fruitman is a psychiatrist in New York who gives ketamine injections for depression.

Ah ok, thanks for the resources guys, that's really helpful. I'll look to those.

For now, I talked to my GP, she's going to attempt to find someone that will administer it.

So I'm curious if your doc found someone to administer ketamine infusions in the Chicago area.

Not yet...I just started emailing back and forth with someone who she said gave infusions in the Chicago area.

There's a clinic run by a Dr. Best in Deerfield (I think) that administers them, but every review of him says he's a complete dick and it costs 1k per infusion.

I'll keep you updated if I find out any more.

Great. I'm curious to hear where that goes.

It looks like you haven't activated babblemail, but perhaps that's one way to stay in touch if you want to talk further off the forum.

Ok I just activated babblemail...I'm not sure if I'm going to do it, depends on how my meds go in the near term. I will update if I find anything new though.

There is a place called Midwest Ketamine Center in the northwest suburbs of Chicago that is administering Ketamine. I don't know if you still need this therapy, but this might be helpful for anyone in the area that is looking.
