Thyroid nodules / lithium?

Posted by Sheilac on December 18, 2012, at 8:45:13

I used a low dose (300mg) of lithium a day for a while and it didn't make me gain weight or give me any side effects. It did help with depression. I can't tolerate the side effects of SSRIs.

I have a thyroid condition called Hashimoto's thyroiditis, which basically means I take Synthroid and have non-cancerous nodules on my thyroid.

I'm wondering at 300mg a day, do I have to worry about Lithium hurting my kidneys or making my thyroid nodules grow?

I too have the autoimmune form of thyroid ie: hasimotos. I was always told no lithium with thyroid illness. I don't have nodules do they scan yours at you endos appointments? Have you considered a lot of your mental problems could be related to the thyroid? As I was fine till got hasimotos at age 49. That is when I took my first ad. I'm getting levels done today as have felt horrible. Tired oh so tired. Last time done level was l.5 which endos feel that 1-2 is optimal level. If so why do I feel miserable. And if you adjust your thyroid med is it up or down for lithium? Are the nodules like goiter? My neice has them. Phillipa

Seems not contraindicated anymore just more frequent monitoring. Phillipa
