Herpills the FDA has been trying to push this on us for years. For instance I know that unless you get Greenstone generic brand of xanax there is no comparison between that and other generics of same pill. A pharmacisit alerted me to this when I was still paying megabucks for brandname. He said made by same company and same med. I could taste then and found the taste identical and workings also. I think they say 20% difference in generics either higher or lower. Of course this is to save insurance companies money by restricting patients to generics. Same with medicaire. That what I was told. if i understand correctly the "active ingredient" (molecules) are the same but the fillers and coatings are different.
as we are all different this can make or break it for some of us.
also with different fillers they may change or enhance the active ingredient making it more or less effective (thus the 20%).b2c.

In the vast majority of cases geeric and brand are equal - a few exceptions are warfarin, thyroxine, digitalis, and maybe bupropion.
The minor differences in blood levels between generic and brand are smaller than the intersubject differences in adsorbsion
Mind over matter is a powerful thing

Are there currently differences between different versions of T4 (thyroxine). I know that there once were. As I recall (and it's been awhile) that was not because there were generics but because thyroxine and others predated the FDA approval process entirely. Then, about a decade ago because of the differences between versions they were forced to go back and get FDA approval. I would have thought that would have ended the problems. Did that not happen?

I think (from memory) that the issue is some variability is absolute bioavaliabilioty, it isnt so much that one is better than another, but that once you are stabalised on one manufacturs product, you should stay on that product, rather than getting a different brand every month depending on what the pharmacist feels like dishing out. Same with warfarin and digitalis - it isnt that the brand name is better, just that you need to settle on one manufacturers product and stick to it

> Mind over matter is a powerful thingI totally agree with Philllipa - I went from name brand xanax to generic and not expecting a change, but wow - it was as though I was withdrawing from xanax (was on same dose of generic). I got real withdrawal symptoms - felt awful. 20% can be a huge difference with a benzodiazepine.. Anyway when I went to Greenstone brand, found it worked exactly the same as the brand, made at the time by the same company as the brand name.

Not good, I liked Teva's Ritalin. Thought they were pretty good.
