i was watching a show called Dark Matters which ... tells stories of mad people ... anyways but I know this drug was used back in the 1920's -40's by psychiatrists as truth serum with traumatic experiences with patients...the only thing I found out why its not used anymore...of course its barbiturate....and alot of people had false memories making it pretty useless, in some cases.
But still ... Amytal would be so great for sleep at night...ugh!! i wished i could find a doc that would ok it...but usally benzos like xanax and ativan would be considered...never barbiturates anymore. I've read the heavy peace feeling it gives is well known...as much as my thoughts make me miserable .. yea well I don't want to seem drug picking.
I just want relief from this mental hell....but the only thing I would get relief from is from benzos from a stingy doctor.
but does anyone have any insightful on this medication? I also know they used it in Dexamyl which was a amphetamine barbiturate combination for depression.

Barbiturates fell from use in the 60's and 70's because the benzodiazepine hypnotics (nitrazepam and flurazepam) were shown in controlled studies to be just as effective, but to be virtualy non toxic in overdose (30 Amytal or Nembutal or Seconal or Tuinal will easily kill you)
They also discovered that benzo hypnotics retain their efficiacy much longer than barbiturates 9totorance to barbiturates is almost complete after 4 weeks, where as nitrazepam still showed significant improvement in sleep peramaters afetr 6 months of daily use)
Barbiturate hypnotics produced a much more severe morning hangover.
Noone is going to prescribe you a barbiturate in this day and age rj - forget it.

Was placidyl a barbituate also? As took that thoughout that third pregnancy too. No wonder she must have been in withdrawal for a good l8 months. Add the two seconals prescribed by ob-gyn when in false labor. What a cocktail. Phillipa

I think Palcedyl was somthing different to a barbiturate, but not realy sure.
My mother was a pharmacist, and she said her most embarrasing moment was when a woman brought in a script and mum read it and said "I need to call your doctor, you realy shouldnt take these when your pregnant"
The woman gave her a death stare and said through gritted teeth "I'm not pregnant"

I think Amytal was mostly used as a sedative, not an anti-anxiety drug. Phenobarbital and Nembutal were more popular for anxiety.
Amytal helped balance out the (potential) agitation from the amphetamine. I think the half-life worked with dexedrine, too. Anyway, they used intravenous amytal with some schizophrenics and used it w/ various amphetamines for drug-facilitated psychoanalysis back when, you know, shrinks actually cared what was going on in your mind.
I guess these days you could take librium or valium with an amphetamine. Something less potent, more sedating, just to even out the upper. Or Seroquel.
Some upper+downer combos used neuroleptics. ThoraDex, StellaDex, that kinda thing. Just enough to add a degree of placidity to the mix, while also lifting the blues. I know someone on Seroquel and Adderall, and the combo works well for her. I guess the practice hasn't gone away entirely.

yea I know jon...its not really that rational.....todays docs NEVER even mention barbiturate unless for phenobarbital in epilpsy and maybe seconal for lucky people. ually its used in hospitals under controlled enviorments for bad insomnia. Still there was a poster here that took Seconal here and she just could get anything she wanted on that presciption pad written for her.
Soo... yea... poor me...:( but ill get over it...lol

yea..its funny benzos can't actaully make a person's system stop...there's something chemically they can't do. Barbiturates cause comas but usally when there extremly misused.
Seconal still would be nice...

yea...i've taken Seroquel with Dexedrine Spans. its diffrent from a benzo because seroquel blocks dopamine and makes the effect of the stimulant less....you don't the psychostimulant effect much especally if its a high dose of seroquel...
xanax and dexedrine together are diffrent...its more like a relaxed stimulation...not too direct and rushy, but still you can feel calm but stimulated. It's wierd to descibe...

In Australia until the late 1980's, you could buy chloral hydrate liquid over the counter under controled conditions (5 days supply only, tha pharmacist had to record your name and address in a log book)....then it was made prescrition only, I guess because of misuse
There was always a bottle of Dormel in our bathroom cupboard
