Benzodiazepines - Dementia

Posted by Guy on September 29, 2012, at 9:26:27

Just read that Harvard researchers have completed a study that shows people who take benzodiazepines have a 50% greater chance of developing dementia after the age of 65. Yikes!

I also saw that, but I didnt think there was a huge % difference btw those who got dementia and were taking benzos and those who got dementia and were not taking benzos. It didnt worry me too much. I think small doses and avoiding alcohol while taking is a good idea.

The other question is: to what extent did the underlying anxiety disorder contribute to dementia? (I didn't read as to whether they adjusted for this or not).

Depression and anxiety are known to lead to an increased risk of dementia.

That doesnt prove cause and effect - people on chemo have a greater chance of dying of cancer than the average person, but that doesnt mean that chemo causes you to die of cancer.
