Trying a change - bupropion

Posted by jono_in_adelaide on September 24, 2012, at 19:20:20

I suffer from the neurotics holy trinity of endrogenous depression, GAD and panic disorder.

The depression has been well controlled, the anxiety reasonable well controled most of the time on sertaline 100mg, reboxetine 4mg twice a day, alprazolam 1mg twice a day and risperidone 1mg at night.

The down side is that my sex drive is till a bit lacking (and sertaline causes sexual problems of its own), and my social drive is also somewhat lower that it used to be, so I have decided to try changing the reboxetrine (NARI) to bupropion (NA/DRI) 300mg per day.

Bupropion is only marketed as a quit smoking aid in Australia, and is horrendously expensive (about 200 bucks for a months supply) but i have obtained some from the US (Actavis brand) for 120 bucks for a 3 month supply.

I know bupropion works as well as reboxetine for the depression, I'll report back as to wether it improves my sex and social drives (and knocks some of the sexual side effects of Zoloft on the head) - heres hoping!

If it doesnt work out, I will go back to reboxetine (and will have wasted 120 dollars), if it does work out, I'll keep buying bupropion from the US

I admire your resourcefulness. I also wonder...were there not any Indian generics? Just a question...sometimes, I go to Indian pharmacies, and I'm struck at how strange the pricing and availability seem.

Best of luck to you.

Hopefully it gets my mojo back - the opportunity to use it has come up, so it would be a shame to waste it :))

What about trying nortriptyline if you should reach this point?

Thats another option Scott, I have used nortriptyline before, and have found it to be about equal to reboxetine (both were excelent for my depression) but the nortriptyline caused some weight gain (or did I just use nortriptyline as an excuse for getting fat)

I think bupropion will work (I have used it before and found it to be equal as an antidepressant, but better from a sexual point of view) but if not, they you're right, I should give nortriptyline another go.

Here's hoping the bupropion works for you Juno!! I know what it's like to have your sex drive knocked out by SSRIs; I think I have been on every one of them and did indeed suffer from sexual side effects. They suck in that respect. Let us know how the bupropion turns out, it should certainly help with the sex drive, and it will help you lose weight, if you want it to; otherwise plan to eat a lot! And it will help you quit smoking if that happens to be an issue for you. As an aside, did you all know that 43% of depressed individuals are smokers? It's said in "official scientific articles" that it hss to do with Dopamine and the pleasure that particular neurotransmitter receptor causes. I can't take bupropion, it makes me too agitated, but I wholeheartedly wish you luck!!!! OK, as usual, I have typed too much in a post. I'm gonna go smoke a cigarette.

Has your buprion arrived yet? I was thinking about you taking it; you're probably already aware it helps with weight loss - my husband lost 70 pounds while on it! - but it may not help in the anxiety department...in my case it just made the anxiety lots worse...but then, everyone is different; you may have a different reaction.
