What condition are you using Adderall to treat?

I hope it works for you.

Hi Scott,
My main dx is bipolar depression but the doctor thinks there may be comorbid adult ADHD. He says sometimes the reason bipolar depression doesn't respond fully to treatment is there's comorbid ADHD, and I have a lot of the symptoms.

I'm a bit nervous/excited and interested to be on amphetamines.

Adderall has helped my depression probably more than anything. ritalin helped a bit but not near as well as adderall.
many people complained saying riatlin was smoother transition. but it was just the opposite for me, i ALways felt the crash about 3.5 hours with ritalin.and adderall is Very smooth for me and i feel it lasts longer.

however to let you know i use the corapharm generic and it has quick onset and releases a bit of anxiety in the mornings but not much. keep in mind that the energy you feel will only last a couple months on it. then it decreases and normalizes. but it made my life liveable.

also, to note the Barr generic was horrible for me, HOWEVER, if the corrpharma brand is to fast acting for you you may want to consider the barr generic. i noticed a Huge difference to me. the barr had almost no effect for my mood.
but with others the corpharma may invoke too much anxiety and then i would say try Barr generic.

i wish you best of luck and keep posting on how trial is going for you.

Hi B2C,
Thanks so much for posting your experience. It looks like the company that manufactures my Adderall is something called "Global." I took 20 mg this morning (the doctor will have me titrating up to 60) and so far, about 6 hours later, I haven't felt a crash or a dip, but I am on the XR preparation.

It has only been a day but it has definitely put a dent in my depression. I feel more awake and more into life in general. I have noticed some appetite loss, so I will have to watch that because I don't have a lot of weight to lose.

Hi Eric,
My new pdoc thinks I may have ADHD. We have been discussing it for awhile and decided to try a stimulant.

My first day has ended with some significant imnomnia. I feel like I won't sleep tonight at all, despite my 3 mg Xanax and symbyax. I feel really hopped up, though the pdoc told me the half life is fairly short. Any tips on managing this?

It may wear off. It did for me after a few days. You can also try to always take it early in the morning and if you can't do that, skip it for the day.

OK, thanks. (nm) » jane d

I have no appetite and boundless energy. I'm a little worried its going to make me hypomanic. I feel very hopped up.

It takes a lot of dextroamphetamine to trigger mania. Like 100s of mgs.

It doesn't seem you have ADHD. A normal ADHD reaction would be opposite of yours: a calming effect.

I'm not so sure that's true especially after one day of use. What are you basing your statement on? Anyway I can offer first hand testimony that this initial reaction is not incompatible with it later helping the SYMPTOMS of ADHD.

Glad to hear it. I got seriously hypo manic once on Wellbutrin and barely slept for a week.

I asked my pdoc about whether stimulants calmed people with ADHD. He said something like "that's the stereotype." But it does seem odd that I'm this revved up.

Is it a bad sort of hopped up, like that which one gets from anxiety?

My psychiatrist has suggested I add Ritalin to my combo.

No, it's a good hopped up. Very energetic, enthusiastic, interested feeling. I don't know whether Ritalin would produce the same effects for you, but Adderall is pretty fun so far. I'm just worried about the sleep. If I don't sleep much for a couple of nights my mood will go haywire no matter what I am on.

Its a reliable stereotype-Adderall the drug is a potent dopamine reuptake inhibitor and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor. Which makes it similar to Wellbutrin in its mechanism of action. For those with ADHD, this action effects the mesolimbic reward pathway. It is theorized that by making the brain more excited, stimulants paradoxically calm people down. Part of the problem in ADD is that the individuals environment doesnt stimulate their brain sufficiently, as it does in people without the illness. As a result ADD-sufferers often feel bored and look for ways to feel more excited often by rapidly shifting their attention to something new, engaging in thrill-seeking or being constantly on the move. By providing the missing stimulation to the brain, these medicines help people calm down and stay focused.

Why would a stimulant drug be helpful in ADD? It is theorized that by making the brain more excited, stimulants paradoxically calm people down. I also read that bipolar disorder can mimic the symptoms of ADHD and causes the same under stimulation in the frontal lobe. So it's hard to distinguish between the two.

I have been sleeping with my normal dose of Xanax and symbyax at night, which is good. My appetite is almost nonexistent still. The initial euphoria from the stimulants has faded, I just feel energized. Too bad, I thought it was the ultimate solution for my depression there for a couple of days.

I'm still just at 20 mg; I'm supposed to eventually titrate up to 60 mg every morning. I'm going to give it another couple of days before adding 10 more mg.
