TRAMADOL

Posted by Bryn B on June 26, 2012, at 15:53:34

hi all-

anyone take tramadol for mdd or have you taken it in the past? I'd love some input. I don't feel like going into details (I've posted a few messages) but basically I have mdd (possibly bipolar 2 or bdd) w/ a lot of pain (headaches, leg pain, etc).
I'm in the midst of a bad depressive episode, but a friend gave me some tramadol for 2 days over the weekend, and it helped.

any feedback would help...

I too have been diagnosed with BPII and other docs have said just depression and anxiety. I have tried and failed all the SSRIs and SNRIs due to side effects or other stuff.

Both my sister and I also have chronic pain issues that come and go. My regular doc has given me Tramadol for years and it has worked for the pain, but both my sister and I have noticed that it fixed our depression - better than regular antidepressants.

I can't take other pain pills so Tramadol or Aleve are it for me and my sister. But I think there must be something about Tramadol being a non-narcotic pain killer that makes it works on certain receptors in the brain.

Whatever it is, they should market it as an antidepressant because it works.

thanks! I'm worried about the dependence issue, but it doesn't seem too different than withdrawing from ssris and other meds. (and I've had to withdraw from a lot!) It does work on both serotonin & norepinephrine, but it's amazing how it actually works right away. I've been in a depressive rut for two months, and the few days I took tramadol, I was actually able to function...

Sheila is it true you can't take tramodol with ssri's & snri's? I don't know. How did you get a doc to prescribe it for you. I know the ibuphrophen works on inflammation causing pain. So is another inflammation issue or tie in. How can you get tramodol? Phillipa

Bryn -

I totally agree, it is great and it works the best for my depression. I don't experience any of the nasty side effects like I did from the SSRIs or the other antidepressants.

BUT - Good luck trying to find a doc that will give you them for anything other than pain.

If only the psych docs would realize this stuff works, I personally haven't found it addictive, and it helps tremendously on my mood.

Why can't a psych doc just realize this and write the script! It works as an antidepressant! Ugh!

Phillipa, No you cannot take Tramadol if you are taking an SSRI or any other antidepressant because Tramadol works on the same receptors in the brain. You could end up with serotonin overload which would be harmful.

I have a chronic bladder condition called IC and traditional pain killers do nothing for the pain of the flare ups. I don't take Tramadol everyday (wish I could I would be a well adjusted, happy person), I only take it when I am having a flare up of IC pain. It works. And I notice a huge difference in my personality. I don't feel drugged, drunk or goofy, just NOT depressed.

My bladder doc writes the RX for them and I only get 3 RXs a year. If I got more, I would totally take it everyday as my antidepressant med.
