Taking Tramadol with Paxil?

Posted by Pepperpot on November 15, 2008, at 18:37:23

I've been taking 60 mg.of Paxil for about 8 years now and am quite satisfied. Last month, my doctor put me on Tramadol for degenerative bone disease and possible cancer of the spine (should be confirmed this week) and I HATE IT! It barely takes the edge off the pain, plus every day I wake up with a headache, vertigo when I move my head, nausea and a general fogginess. It also seems to make me feel sad.

I used to be on MS Contin, then the Duragesic (fentanyl) patch which I was quite happy with, but my doctor died and my new one will NOT prescribe narcotics. He more or less told me to take it or leave it (the Tramadol).

Anyone else on both Paxil and Tramadol? Please tell me how it affects you.

Thanks, Nan :-(

No but feel that was cruel of the doc since it was working. Weren't abusing right? So sorry about the possible cancer diagnosis. I also have degenerative disc disease what is the reason they suspect cancer? Doing a bone scan? Love Phillipa

Hi Nan, sorry you're in pain,

I wonder if those symptoms aren't from combining Paxil with Tramadol. I never had any symptoms like that with Tramadol taken alone (sometimes a mild good feeling). I took Tramadol (Ultram) for disc and spinal nerve pain, it worked well for me. However, you sound a lot worse off than I was, and may have some tolerance to nacotics as you've had them before.

I'm not a big believer in pain. Can you see a specialist, pain or orthopedic, who does believe in relieving pain? Ultram isn't going to touch some kinds of pain. When my neck pain turned into intolerable headaches, my doc would prescribe Vicoprofen (hydrocodone), not as strong as what you were taking but a LOT stronger than Ultram. Vicoprofen ALWAYS knocked it out.

Don't think I've ever heard of a Doc who wont prescribe more than Tramadol. Is this your GP? Does he think you've ever had a problem with narcotics (even if you haven't?) That just sounds strange to me.

Good luck, sounds like you're going to have to see specialist to get pain under control IMHO.

Hope you get some relief~Jade

Tramadol mixed with paxil is a combination that warrants close monitoring due to potential serotonin syndrome. Besides its mild action at opioid receptors, tramadol has significant action at serotonin reuptake inhibition and norepinephrine reuptake inhibition.

If tramadol, or anything for that matter, gives you scary side effects, you should stop it. That's just my opinion.

Thanks to everyone who answered! And thank you for the welcome. It's great to find a forum like this where we can be ourselves and discuss our meds and disorders.

Thank you bleauberry for telling me about the seritonin storm by combining the two medications. I've looked online and found very little informatin about this, just hints. It has made me so sad that on Oct. 30th, I slit a vein in my foot (was actually looking for an artery) with a razor and was ready to die, except my boyfriend came in, saw me with my foot in a half-full ice-cream bucket of blood and called 911. At the time I was mad as hell at him, but now I'm glad he happened to drop by when he did.

I'm in Canada, so as we receive government funded health care, it's extremely difficult to get to a specialist. It took me 3 years to see an orthopedic surgeon - the one who discovered the tumour on my back - and as I am a "complex case" he has referred me to the one man in the city who can do the surgery required on my back and hips. I won't get in to see him until January.

I was wait-listed for a Chronic Pain Centre (took two years to get in) and all they prescribed was amnitriptaline or gabapentin. Both make me crazy in the head - they make me totally stoned and do nothing for pain. Sucks, ay?

Anyway, you've all given me ideas. Thank you SO much for your support.

Hugs, Nan

well im in the same boat basically i trusted my doctor BIG MISTAKE! i was on paxil and then put on tramadol had i known the risk i would have rejected this severe memory loss , pain , heart pain , increased depression basically all the side effects raised its evil head landed me in jail! i basically detoxed in jail off these drugs of the devil without any knowledge of the actual things that went on every side effect showed through i later read that risk had out weighed benefits , so i just decided my doctor would never be a good marine because he left me to die! its real people i lost memory of well over 5 to maybe 8 months, and at first i was sympathetic to this doctor but then i realized hey he ruined your life george, so i am gonna make it as difficult for this doctor to ever do this again not to mention he wouldnt call me back when i noticed these problems early on because i owed him 47 dollars , i was trying to understand why i was done this way but when i look at it he put my life in serious line of death, so as you can know now im pissed and i realized i was just another number to him maybe someone he could push around and because him i now face a few charges through the law. well god says do on to others as you would like them to do on to you,he gave me a death wish , almost caused me my life literally inches from being shot and killed i was ultimately tasered ! jail time gave me a chance to detox and realize that the medicine was a big mistake on his part , so in a nut shell i dont care what it cost he will give me my life back he at least needs to confess to his mistake and i would let it go but he bassically thought because i was depressed i was mentally ill and he was sadly mistaken his medicines created that , and now he must admit this or i will try to make him pay for his mistakes, he showed his neglect of a patient now i want justice for the lost soul i once was and he helped create, see lucily my family was smart and was reminding i was having problems because i had no memory of these unfortunate and wasted days and he knew all he had to do is make it right , he didnt and i am no push over ! so now even though i hate to because he claims to be christian, i am going to take action and like the lord it will be swift,he is not god he will not choose my outcome! and all he has to do is ask me to forgive and in writeing admit to his neglect and he will be forgiven, but sad enough he never gave me that chance so why should i? i do know he will no longer be my doctor because he broke the trust between us, and wrote me off when he should have done the right thing . do not let people or doctors make your choice and please read side effects! it could save your life i was lucky to come out alive i almost died from withdrawals in jail, doctors dont care anymore, but the silly thing was the people of the bulloch county jail in statesboro , georgia treated me a hell of alot better than my doctor and when this happens somewhere you have been done wrong bottom line he does not need to be a doctor so he can do this to other people! maybe he should work with hospice because he is not out to save lives and he knows who he is , he may need to consider being a coroner because his ethics was left at the door and hes just a clean up man , thanks with love , george fadden p. s. all statement i have made are true dont wait until you go through it to believe me , take control and say no to drugs that can kill!!!!!!!
