Hi all,
I am a rather anxious patient just starting a regime of Prozac treatment.
I enjoy weight training and manipulating my body fat and lean mass in the gym. I'm due a fat loss stage, but I'm very concerned about the reports I read EVERYWHERE about Prozac (and other SSRIs) either causing weight gain, or stalling fat loss progress.
I thought it might be a help to ask here about experiences. I understand people on SSRIs might become complacent with food and eat more without knowing etc, but...
Is there anyone here who made an active attempt to lose weight (calorie counting etc.) but couldn't while on SSRIs? If so, can you usually lose weight normally while off the medication?
Conversely, did anyone notice no difference, even on long term treatment?
Thanks in advance for any help. It really is appreciated.
Alex.

Fluoxetine I believe is the least likely of all ssris to increase weight, and can even cause weight loss in the side effects list.
I lost weight on it. I lost weight on zoloft also primarily because it messed with my appetite. The others had a little weight gain.
The only way to know what effect a med will have with your own unique biochemistry will be to try it and see what happens.

I think SSRIs and lots of other psych meds screw with metabolism. I remember I used to get dizzy with what I assume was hypoglycemia half way thru the day on prozac.
Its all a trade-off.. what level of risk you take versus the reward you get.
if weight gain is a concern, Id look into wellbutrin or zoloft rather than prozac. If depression is all youre treating. anything in the anxiety spectrum may not like those two drugs.
This is the end of the thread.
