Does Trileptal help depression?

Posted by sheilac on March 23, 2012, at 8:27:35

I was wondering if Trileptal directly or indirectly effects serotonin or other chemicals that help with depression?

I know it calms me, and that is good. But I am wondering if Trileptal helps with depression.

Also, does anyone know or have experienced excessive urination with Trileptal?

It might help to reduce glutamate activity, cell firings, and enhance GABA activity. This can be calming.

I have not seen Trileptal act as an antidepressant in unipolar depression. However, it might be helpful in bipolar disorder.

You might have to increase your salt intake. Trileptal can deplete the body of salt (sodium). It is a good idea to have a blood test just to make sure.

Why I wonder did they give me trileptal for an adjunct to an SSRI? And when did the blood testing start. As it wasn't around when took it. Wow it was a long time ago. Phillipa

Trileptal exerts some effect on serotonine and dopamine receptors, which contributes to its AD profile.

I read a medical study, which I can't remember specifics off the top of my head.

It stated Trileptal increased concentrations of seretonin in the prefrontal cortex and also increased dopmamine in some other part of the brain. Google trilpetal/seretonin.

I took trileptal back in the day, with Klonopin and Ambien. Kind of helpful for my "depression" (usually agitated, anxious, sometimes psychotic depression), but might not be the thing for you.

Have you considered going back on low-dose adderall?

Just wanted to share my experience w/ Trileptal. I have been taking it for 2 months and my latest dose is 1200mg/day for the past month. My current diagnosis is bipolar II.

In my opinion, it is calming, and my mood is more stable, but it doesn't have tons of antidepressant "oomph".

I am also taking fish oil, & recently added 2.5mg Zyprexa at bedtime for sleep.

Hope this helps.

Oliver
