Tegretol tiredness...

Posted by Sheilac on February 3, 2012, at 16:29:47

Just started 200mg Tegretol at night. Tomorrow I go to 200mg, 2x a day.

I find myself really tired during the day.

Does anyone know if that will go away in time? Or will Tegretol always make me sleepy?

This is not unusual.

I can't answer that question. I believe that the sedation can persist with some people.

If the fatigue and sleepiness persist with Tegretol, you can look into using Trileptal as a substitute. The two drugs are related, and Trileptal is less apt to produce sedation. Just be sure to check your sodium levels occasionally with this drug. Occasionally, they can become too low.

Slow titration of Tegretol is recommended to reduce the risk of adverse effects. You might want to ask your doctor about staying at the lower dose for a bit longer before you look at increasing the dose.

The tablets are scored so I think I might try 100mg at night and 100mg in the morning. I just feel too out of it during the day on 400mg. I can't interact with people. I take naps. I'm a freakin veggie. I am a lightweight though when it comes to meds.

I think for now 200mg a day is good. Maybe my personality will come back.

Plus she wants me to still take Klonopin.

A lot of people can only tolerate 100-200mg per day initially, this is normal. You should be able to increase after a couple of weeks, if necessary.

So, maybe I will get over the tiredness? I hope so or I won't stick with this med. Would Trileptal be safer and not make me as tired?

Also, I take 200mg at night and I notice the next day when I have lunch (when I eat) I notice I get tired all over again. Weird. It's like the metabolism of food makes Tegretol kick in again.

Yes, I hope so. You will probably be able to tolerate a higher dose in a few weeks. Tegretol induces its own metabolism - this means that taking Tegretol regularly causes it to be metabolised more rapidly. Initially, even small doses can feel very strong but this doesn't necessarily last.

>Would Trileptal be safer and not make me as tired?

Possibly, but not necessarily, and Tegretol has received more study than Trileptal for psychiatric purposes.
