Bad Insomnia for 2 months now

Posted by Dragi on January 20, 2012, at 16:29:21

Hi ! I'm new to this Board and have started this topic because of my Fear of why I have Insomnia ?
Before I explain what has been happing , Let me say I am a male 28 years old. who never has had a problem sleeping. I used to sleep 9 to 11 hours easily.
My problem began a little more then two months ago. One night I went to bed as usual at around 12 am and woke up at
2 am and couldn't get back to sleep all night. The next night I couldn't fall asleep at all , even though I was very tired. I then started to really worry about what was going on,So I googled Imsomnia and what pops up but a article on Fatal Insomnia and how it's usually genetic but there is a Sporadic form as well! Well that was the straw that broke the camels back. I was so scared I had this. The next night I took 2 Tylenal Pms and slept a good seven hours. The next night the Pms didint work and I was up until 4 am and managed only 2 hours of sleep. I went to see my Doc who put me on 100mg of Trazodone witch did not work at all! So the pattern began where every night I would just lay awake in bed until somehow I drifted off to sleep always around 4 or 5 am . On good nights at best I could manage 4 hours of sleep . I have noticed when I do sleep all I do is Dream every night sometimes 5 Dreams a night! I would Dream then wake up then dream again. I was very afraid that I had Fatal Insomnia even though I know only 1 in a Billion get it. I saw my Doc again and told him I'm afraid I had this horrible Disease and he looked at me like I'm crazy! I am at my wits end I'm so afraid I have this disease and my Doc thinks its all in my head . But it can't be I am really not sleeping so it's not like I'm faking that. How do I get out of this mess please someone tell me?
Thanks

You have to go through all the "light" and b*llsh*t medications they always try at first like trazadone. You have to be very elaborate in exlaining your distress. Never mention medications, because even if you don't have any drug intentions some doctors will think your drug seeking. Explain how you try to go to sleep and it doesnt work an its effecting your daily life during the day. You have to pressure them and repeatly imput you are having trouble functioning during the day. Then your doctor will maybe considered Ambien or Restoril.

I read about that disease some time back. It mentioned these people in (I think) Italy. There is no point in worrying because there is no treatment. Nothing medical worked to give these people any sleep.

I am having some success with herbs, TCM things, lots of zizyphus and a bit of temazepam. But I know what you mean about waking up after 2 hours and that is it for the night. It makes the next day really hard, and of course gives you plenty of time to worry.

Hi Dragi welcome to babble. Insomnia is very very common and many speak of having it. Have you been having anxiety attacks before or now other than worrying about lack of sleep. I do understand your concern. Will your doc prescribe a med specifically targeted for insomnia? I don't feel you have fatal insomnia. Why not google insomnia again and see if you find some more articles that are more common to the public. I've had insomnia and lots of dreams many times also. I do take a benzodiazaphine for sleep. I get major insomnia when I go off zyprexa. I can stay awake for 3 days and be lucky to get any sleep unless I take my meds. My other problem is that I can't eat without it. These were all simptoms I had before taking zyprexa and since going on zyprexa 13 years ago I don't have any problems if I take the zyprexa.

You do not have Fatal Familial Insomnia.

The disease has four stages, taking 7 to 18 months to run its course:

The patient suffers increasing insomnia, resulting in panic attacks, paranoia, and phobias. This stage lasts for about four months.
Hallucinations and panic attacks become noticeable, continuing for about five months.
Complete inability to sleep is followed by rapid loss of weight. This lasts for about three months.
Dementia, during which the patient becomes unresponsive or mute over the course of six months. This is the final progression of the disease, after which death follows.

Other symptoms include profuse sweating, pinpoint pupils, the sudden entrance into menopause for women and impotence for men, neck stiffness, and elevation of blood pressure and heart rate. Constipation is common as well.

In the meantime, ask your doctor for some Clonazepam and Seroquel. Clonazepam will suppress the dreams and both will help you sleep.

That sounds pretty good. Maybe you should add it to the "Poll" insomnia treatment thread.
