Combining MAOIs?

Posted by EERR11CC on January 15, 2012, at 17:00:36

Anyone have any idea how dangerous (yes, yes...) it would be to combine MAOIs? Or to be more precise to use B.caapi (which contains harmine and harmaline which are RIMAs) with Parnate or Nardil?

What is the theoretical danger of combining Nardil and Parnate?

I think serotonin syndrome. I know when I was in McLean, they did a two week washout of ensam (failed experiment) before starting me on parnate.

I wouldnt imagine MAOIs could conflict with each other. Whats going to happen? inhibit MAO?
Perhaps theres a danger if its inhibited 100% instead of 99%. Not sure.
The problem of toxicity sounds like one of mixing meds that raise serotonin in different ways. Like inhibiting MAO and then adding re-uptake inhibition.
I take rhodiola with SSRIs with no issues.

It is hard to assess theoretical concerns without knowing more about the pharmacology of these two drugs. They do more than just inhibiting MAO.

Stroke is a concern. It has been seen clinically.
