Clomipramine/Anafranil anyone?

Posted by bearfan on November 5, 2011, at 15:38:41

Anyone swear by or against this stuff? I tend to have slightly better remission rates withs SNRIs such as Effexor, but Effexor, while effecitve, killed the libido so much I'm looking for alternatives. I have tried Tofranil in the past, but it tended to cause bladder problems and fatigue. I heard Clomipramine can be good with anxiety, depression and some OCD, which I suffer from. I just don't want to start up a trial just to be disappointed with weight gain and the usual side effects by the older anti-depressants. Also what tends to be the standard dose for this stuff? Is it 50 or 75mg?

Clomipramine is a very potent antidepressant, however, it causes weight gain, dry mouth and some sexual side effects (similar to Effexor and other seretogenic antidepressants)

All the antipderessants that block seretonin reuptake will have these side effects unfortunatly.

If you want an antidperessant without sexual side effects and weight gain, it might be worth trying Welbutrin 300mg/daily. If you have anxiety or OCD issues, add some Zoloft, 50-100mg/day.....the Welbutrin helps counteract the sexual side efects

Standard dose would be 150mg/day I think

I'm also kind of interested to hear from people who have taking Effexor, Cymbalta or a few of the stimulating antidepressants and can judge how they compare?

For me clomipramine is a tricky drug. Very good for depression and OCD though.
It makes me more horny but at the same time dose-depently disables my sexual performance. Very annoying.

Hi, this is one drug that worked for me when no others would. That said, it does come with side effects. You can start at 50mg or even 25. I found it was quite strong at start-up. Side effects might be less if you start at 25.

> Anyone swear by or against this stuff?

It is the only antidepressant that adequately treated my anxiety and OCD.

>I heard Clomipramine can be good with anxiety, depression and some OCD

Clomipramine is considered the 'gold' standard for the treatment of depression and OCD

I have lost weight on Clomipramine. Though it has not affected my libido it has left me anorgasmic (unable to orgasm) which is extremely frustrating. Another side effect I got was EPS.

Up to 150 mg for depression and up to 250 mg for the treatment of OCD.

I take 50mg of Clomipramine daily. It's a very potent antidepressant. It will increase your appetite and I find it difficult to say when I'm hungry or not. Concerning the libido, I'm kind of horny sometimes, especially when I'm sleepy. It makes me anorgasmic too. If you want to have an orgasm, you have to really want it. It can makes you last longer but I don't feel as strong as when I'm drug-free. Otherwise it's a very powerful antidepressant. It took me out of a deep, dark depression and anxiety disorder. I couldn't go out and leave the house. Now I feel much calmer. I'd say that the standard therapeutic dose is 75mg which can be quite enough.
