Once I came back to life, after my last severe depression,I ordered all of my records from the ers I went to.I saw that there was an order for a brain mri that I didnt have done at the time. They wanted to rule out organic causes for my symptoms.I hadnt yet started an ssri or klonopin, and I decided to have the mri.It came back completely normal.I just wonder how that could be,wouldnt my hippocampus? or something have shrunk? Wouldnt something have shown up? This episode was so severe that the pdoc that saw me at 1 er told my husband that I would die w/o proper treatment,as I had stopped eating and sleeping and refused all meds.

I've had more than one MRI of the brain over the years and all are normal. Result is normal for age. I had them due to chronic lymes disease and a pituitary microadenoma. So why would you feel your hypocampus shrunk? Phillipa

The articles I have read about severe depression and it's effects on the brain, have said something about a part of the brain, not 100% sure of which part, maybe hippocampus?,shrinks in response to severe depression.Maybe someone can post a study or knows more about this. But its good to know that your brain is normal, and you've been on a benzo for so long, makes me worry less about brain shrinkage!

An MRI is often administered in severe cases of mental illness. Typically they would be looking for lesions or other anomolies that might effect affect. If something had shown up, you'd already know about it.
Have you ever had ECT?

Gadchik had chronic lymes disease hence the MRI the first time and second ruled out MS also. So yes no brain damage on benzos. I still feel if not abused one of the safest meds. Phillipa

That is really interesting, as I have read several things about studies that show that in depressed patients, frontal lobes are smaller and amygdalas are significantly enlarged. Does an MRI show the amygdala?

If you want to shrink your brain go and take some antipsychotics. Zyprexa or Seroquel will do it.
