Hi,
I have been on other SSRIs, but the past week and a half have been on Paxil at 25mg, now just going up to 50mg. I have been exercising every single day, high intensity. Usually I start to see myself slimming down a bit, even if its barely noticable, but the past few days I have been noticing myself seem a little puffy or fatter...does paxil cause edema, water retention at all? Differentially moreso than other SSRIs which have never given me this problem? Or bloating?
Why is that?
Or maybe I am imagining it. I can't afford to look any fatter, and i'm trying my hardest to lose weight now, so water retention is a bad deal. I think i'm going to go back on a low-carb diet though, that always helps.

I only took l0mg of paxil with xanax when in late 40's and didn't gain weight or retain water. But I also was working and very active my very first ad. Isn't that a high dose of paxil? I do know from seeing a picture that my sister gained a lot of weight on 40mg of paxil and switched to zoloft. No idea what her weight is now as we are estranged. Phillipa

Not good news, I'm afraid.Paxil is the SSRI that is associated with the greatest amount of weight-gain. I'm pretty sure that it is all fat. I don't know what to tell you regarding water retention.

Is it an appetite or sweet craving issue, or is it a metablic side effect e.g. Would metformin help...
I just got off metformin since there were some reports it lowered testosterone and worsened depression but I may go back on

Both!
When I brought my intake down to 1500 calories, I managed to lose 10 pounds while on Nardil. I was unable to keep it off, though. The hunger was too much too deal with. Now that I am off Nardil, I have lost 18 pounds in 3 weeks. I have not cut my caloric intake much, so a great deal of that weight loss I attribute to metabolic changes.

I have heard conflicting stories about metformin. I have never used it, and I don't know anyone who has.

Ok more paxil problems. Is it just me or is it really drying me out? Very thirsty all the time...how can that coexist with feeling puffy? And also would it effect sweating, because i had a job interview this morning and was sweating like a pig, so embarassing...it shouldnt have been nerves either, because it's just a temp firm and i wasn't mentally worried at all. I just sweated.
I increased my does to 50mg this morning, i think that might be too much. I'm feeling a little detatched today and numbed out....i don't know...should i stick with it and hope this feeling goes awaey? In this feeling i feel like i can't feel much of anything, ya know? Just a general vague sense of emptyiness that isn't quite depression, isn't quite boredom, is certainly not contentment, not quite apathy, and more than just fatigue. Will this go away, or is this what i'm stuck with on an SSRI (again, it seems. I always seem to remember why I don't like SSRIs once i am on them again) but if it is startup effets from dose increase then i'm willing to deal with them.
I am exercising 50minutes a day intensely though so hopefully that counteracts some of the weight gain.
My eyes feel weird too...dry i guess. Ugh ugh ugh.

You started paxil at 25mg? Why so high in beginning? Wouldn't starting on a lower dose be better? Phillipa

Just to let you know I have been on paxil for 14 or so years mostly at 20mg. I had no weight gain, no side affects at all really.
I think I am extremely rare though.
Good luck to you!
