My pdr. suggested ECT

Posted by ihatedrugs on October 12, 2011, at 14:35:42

Hello all,

I went to a consultation with the leading ECT guru at the largest teaching hospital in the state, and after talking he suggested I'd be a good candidate for ECT. I had initially gone to discuss RTMS but found out insurance doesn't cover it and I don't have $10,000 to spend on a treatment that doesn't offer a guarantee. If it did, I would pay anything. Anyway, I have taken a 2 month leave of absence to have the ECT but I'm so scared. Not so much of the procedure itself but losing too much memory. (although I wouldn't mind forgetting I've been depressed all these years). I've read both accounts of it being miraculous for some and a nightmare for others. I read the Kitty Dukakis book and at times I'm sure I'll do it but at others I just don't know. I know ultimately this is a decision I have to make, I just wish the results were so hit or miss. Meds haven't worked and if they have, it has only been marginally and until they peter out. I've gained 50 lbs, have cholesterol levels in the 300, have lost quite a bit of cognitive function as well as word recall ability, all these I attribute to the endless medications I have taken during the past 20 years. It seems to me that there is no silver bullet and either treatment is just as insidious as the next. So if I go through with it, I will let you know how it went.
Thanks, just needed to vent my frustration. God bless.
