TCA's + stimulants?

Posted by gman22 on October 11, 2011, at 8:04:34

Has anyone used TCA + stimulants together? I am currently doing well on Dr. Gillman's recommended combo-sertraline 50mg + nortriptyline 50mg... I am getting daytime fatigue and methlyphenidate has worked well in the past, but i haven't used with this particular combo. I am healthy but I have concerns that this may cause cardiac or blood pressure issues. I found some info on
Google but I am looking more for personal experiences.

I have combined methylphenidate and amphetamine with desipramine without a problem.

You might consider the possibility that your nortriptyline dosage is too low.

You may find the stimulant plus the NE effects of the TCA will do strange things to your resting heart rate and BP. I took desipramine which is much stronger on NE, along with adderall and I had a little problem with HR and BP. Desipramine gave me headaches for the first few weeks on it. BP related as far as I can tell.
Its probably fine, but Id monitor yourself before and after and let the doc know what changes you see.

I took Adderall with Tofranil-PM w/o any problems, except for a bit (5-10lbs) weight gain with the Tofranil.

That's not a bad idea. You might want to get an EKG and check blood pressure before beginning treatment so as to establish a baseline and check for irregularities. Thereafter, you can repeat these tests from time to time during treatment.
