Hi. I see my pdoc tomorrow, and when we last met, he discussed the possibility of a 12mg emsam patch with me, but wanted to look up the real world restrictions that might come into play.
I am currently on 9mg and have not had to restrict anything, although by habit avoid the top offenders such as soy sauce, tap beer, fermented foods.
Any real difference in going to 12mg?
I want to add that for about 9+ hours of the day I am not wearing the patch. I take it off a few hours before bed to help with sleep.
Thanks.

Unless things have changed supposedly the maoi restrictions apply to 12mg of emsam but then they did with 9mg and you haven't had to follow the diet. Maybe things have changed since emsam avoids the digestive tract? Love Phillipa

My understanding is that, at 12mg, you need to follow the MAOI diet -- limited cheese, no dried meats, linited soy sauce, no tap beers. It's not really that restrictive.
Someone posted a link not too long ago on research on tyramine in foods.

Thanks, e. I feel I could follow the restrictions fairly easily because much of that food isn't part of my diet. And I don't use cold medication or other OTC meds. But I would need to fix them more firmly in my mind.
My pdoc is pretty cautious. I could be described as an absent-minded type, and I imagine this comes across in our office visits. He also insisted I order a medical bracelet ASAP. My last doc never mentioned it.

I wear a medical bracelet. The main concern is that anestesiologists or ER residents don't give you demerol. Apparently, this is what happened to that young woman Libby (something) who died in an ER when given demerol on top of phenelzine. Her father was a NYT journalist who sued and his suit is usually credited with changes in the law to limit residents' hours.

Yes. I remember that case. My bracelet says rx:maoi/no Demerol on line one. The second line says hypertensive crisis risk. I asked my doc what to write. Then had to cram it into two short lines :-/
I was concerned that people would inquire about my bracelet, (I am a very poor liar), but not a single person has to date. I am so thankful.
