I do not have diabetes, but I have been told that I could possibly be pre-diabetic and since I am taking Geodon my doc gave me Metformin as well. Said it couldn't hurt.
Well, after weeks of feeling so depressed and emotional I stopped taking the Metformin and the depression has gone away.
Why would Metformin cause depression? Is it making my blood sugar level too low and that would cause mood issues?
I don't want to get diabetes from taking Geodon and had no other issues with Metformin, but I can't take the depression it doles out!
Anyone know?

At one point I considered taking Metaformin for weightloss
When I did some research I found out that Metaformin interferes with sex hormone production,
This results in less Testosterone...........Not good, obviously, especially for men, but presumably it messes with women's hormones as well, that might be part of it?

This is what I found on wiki:
"Metformin has also been reported to decrease the blood levels of thyroid-stimulating hormone in people with hypothyroidism,[53] and, in men, testosterone.[54][55]
The clinical significance of these changes is still unknown."

Instead of taking metformin you should monitor your blood sugar for a little while to make sure its not high. No higher than 200 an hour after a meal, or any other time of the day. No higher than 100 in morning before eating. Geodon gave me bad diabeties, high sugars, especialy in the morning an hour after eating carbs. You can buy a meter at wallmart and strips. Or get one free if you tell them you are diabatic.
I took metformin when on geodon and it helped termendously. Never made me depressed or anything. Merformin won't give you blood sugar that is too low.

Geodon isnt usually one of the AAPs that cause diabetes or weight gain. Maybe thats since it seems to tweak NE so much? You might be just fine without metformin. Might be worth checking your blood sugar and weight after a couple months.

I stopped metformin this week to test out whether it's responsible for mood and testosterone issues. Was taking 1700mg for weight. Unsure of response, but feeling a little better however doing multiple changes at once! So don't use this as guidelines!
