I have an armchair understanding of psychopharmacology.
You know our familiar friends, serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine ? GABA/glutamate and NMDA (and others)...
Suppose one is low in testosterone, or uses testosterone replacement therapy (like me). How does this translate to antidepressant activity in the brain? An increase or decrease of specific neurotransmitters, activity, or changes in feedback loops in the brain?
Does anyone know this?
I am just curious.

I wonder if something will pop up on a google search? As it seems since thyroid and all the hormones are connected to body and brain they would all work together. But no I don't know. Phillipa

I don't know for testosterone specifically, but hormones interact with neurotransmitters just like psychotropic drugs do.
For instance, thyroid inhibits monoamine oxidase as well as the norepinephrine and dopamine transporters. Estrogen is a monoamine oxidase inhibitor. DHEA acts as a sigma agonist as well as inhibiting monoamine oxidase. Progesterone enahances gaba activity (at gaba-a receptors) while estrogen is a gaba antagonist. Many of the hormones also promote neurotransmitter release.
Testosterone has some effect on dopamine, but I am not sure about the mechanism of action.
