Parnate Stopped Working...HELP

Posted by Elizabeth Munson on August 15, 2011, at 17:14:01

HI, I have been on Parnate at 60mg/ for the last 5 years with excellent results. No other med. has worked for me except Nardil which caused massive weight gain.
I saw a new p-doc in May who gave me one of the old and powerful,anti-psychotics (forget name) and reduced my clonazapam from 3 mg. to 1.5.
I had a horrible reaction to the anti-psychotic which lasted three days. I thought I would jump out of my skin. My husband had to hold me as hard as he could as I was trembling so much. I ran out of the clono. and when I called this p-doc I got his answer phone every time. I left frantic calls for more clono. to get some relief as I had been up for 3 days, but he did not respond.
Finally I went to my GP who gave me the clononazapam and I finally slept after 3 days of pure hell.
I went back on my 60 mg of parnate as I had always taken and found it no longer worked at all. It was if I was taking sugar pills. All summer long I continued to take 60mg of parnate, as I had always done, in the hope it would eventually kick in. It has not even after three months. I have been and still am so depressed and anxious all I think of is death and dying.
Is there anything, does anyone know, that might augment this parnate block and get it working again?
I am allergic to all anti-psychotics ending up in emergency, when I took geodon last year, with Neuroleptic Malignancy Syndrome. I almost died and was delirious for three days. I was told at that time by the Head of Psychiatry who treated me at this large, city hospital never to take anti-psychotics again. Still this new p-doc gives me anti-psychotics. And always with disastrous results. What to do to get parnate working again.....lila in pain............

Ouch! That's terrible.

To the best of my understanding, I could be wrong, the old antipsychotics and even to some degree the new ones tend to cling to their respective receptors long after the drug is gone...weeks, months, longer? If that were true, then maybe it will take extra power to compete with that bond. Or maybe the receptors have had their sensitivity changed and now it will take more power to get through to them? I dunno. In any case, I think the most logical thing from any perspective is.....up the dose. 80mg, 100mg, 120mg.

I'd find a new psychiatrist for a starter.

Then, I'd look at augmenting the Parnate with a tricyclic antidepressant, such as nortriptyline, say 75-100mg at bedtime..... start off at 25mg and slowly build up over a couple of weeks.

A new shrink is a good idea. Why risk such problems in someone who doesn't even have a psychotic disorder? Then I'd try xanax instead of Klonopin. It even comes in once-daily xr form now.

Have you tried stimulants?

I don't think my doctor (certainly not the P-doc who I am going to stop seeing) will prescrib stimulants even though I would give anything for some energy and focus. What my doctor did do was prescribe Cytomel 50mg to take every morning with my 60mg parnate every morning. Do you think this will help restore my brain to it's former state because i feel the anti-psychotic made some changes and is blocking positive receptors. Please help if you can I am still desperate and sad...........lila in pain...

'Parnate stopped working.'
I have used Parnate successfully for a long time.
The most useful of many tested - for me. It is now working only inconsistently. I have narrowed down the culprit(s) to Vegetable Oil, particularly Canola. It is very bad for me. (It put me in a Psyche Hospital.) Whether because it is not a 'regular' vegetable oil but a GM'ed mustard seed oil. I could be wrong. Also Vegetable Gum of some types has a similar destructive or 'overloading' effect.
I try to go back to animal fats, which nowadays sounds bad. Vegetable Oil is in very many products we buy nowadays. Label-reading is a must! Also bowel activity must be regular for me for it to 'work'. It is said that brain chemistry troubles start in the gut.

Im in a similar dreadful situation and would appreciate your response. Many thanks.
