I have had a bit of a break. Due to an allergic reaction to some bee stings I had to get a steroid shot and after about 30 hours I had become manic.
My doc suggested since the Geodon puts me to sleep during the day maybe I should take a low dose of Abilify during the day and Geodon at night.
Really?
I've heard people taking Seroquel at night and another antipsychotic during the day.
Last time I tried Abilify I started gaining weight. I cannot gain any weight, so I am afraid of trying it.
Anyone take 2 antipsychotics?
Would taking a dose as low as 1 - 2mg during the day make me sleepy and fat?
Risperdal also makes me gain weight.
Geodon is weight neutral for me.
I also take Klonopin, which has helped since the steroid shot, but not enough.
My nighttime Geodon dose wears off and I have to have to have something now during the day.
No more steroids if I can help it.

Abilify is pretty long acting, half life of 3 days. So it won't were off at night. Geodon might put you to sleep though, and not in the morning. So I guess that could work.
I take 2 APs now zyprexa and perphenazine, it works well. I tried geodon and abilify separetly, they did not work out for me, but could for you. Abilify did not make me fat, I burned calories quickly, so fast that I had to eat and eat to keep sugars up.

2 antipsychotics might be called for in some forms of Bipolar I or Schizophrenia/Schizoaffective, but you seem to have a relatively mild bipolar disorder.I'd personally pick 1 neuroleptic and stick with it.

Is this just short term til the steroid injection wears off? Steroids as you seem to know can cause all sorts of psychiatic symptoms. Phillipa

I don't feel comfortable either with 2 anti-psychotics. I'd rather stick with the least amount of meds.
I upped my Geodon to 80 at night and 20 during the day and so far it's ok. I have had to go back to 3mg of Klonopin a day. Maybe in time when the steroids wear off I can cut back.
If I still gets fits of anger due to the steroid injection I may have to go up to 40mg during the day.
Ordinarily Geodon during the day would make me sleepy, but since the steroids made me easily manic (get worked up into a rage pretty easily), 20mg Geodon hasn't made me tired.
Thank goodness for Klonopin.

Stelazine or haloperidol dont cause any drowsiness or weight gain

I personally wouldn't take either of those, but a low-to-moderate dose of perphenazine might not be so bad.

What would you say is the frequency of occurrence of tardive dyskinisia with these two drugs? I can see using them as an acute intervention on a manic or schizoid psychosis. However, for chronic treatment, I find the atypicals to be cognitively cleaner, less sedating, and having a lower rate of EPS.
I would look at Navane (thiothixene) for chronic treatment if a first-generation neuroleptic is to be used.

Hey, Scott-
Why would you recommend Navane? I'm not questioning your judgment, I'm just curious. I'm pretty good on Abilify (now 15mgs), but sometimes I think a low-dose typical might be a good, cost-effective option.
Thanks.

Hi.A friend of mine has been brought into remission with Navane after ten years of searching for an effective treatment for schizoaffective disorder. She also takes Seroquel and Wellbutrin. The only side effect that appeared when she added the Navane is dysmenorrhea. No weight gain. She is alert, clear-thinking, and energetic. There is less affective instability. I guess seeing is believing.

Afraid of adding Abilify, even just a low dose of 2mg during the day, I added 20mg of Geodon during the day along with 1mg of Klonopin. This works for about 4 hours and then it's either not strong enough or the Klonopin wears off.
I have had 3 screaming rage incidents in the past 3 days (since I got the steroid injection). Not good. I even yelled at a neighbor!
I either need to take more Geodon(40mg?) or 20mg twice during the day? Or just try the Abilify and keep the Klonopin handy.
I am out of control and it's not good.
This is the end of the thread.
