HI All -
I was on Risperdal for 2 days and got tongue rolling. My tongue became SUPER stiff and now I am opening my mouth to relive the pain.
I have been on Adderall for a year daily and had to come off from that 3 weeks ago because of this.
After 3 weeks, the tongue movements are still here. I am AVOIDING all social situations since this happened and my depression has become so bad!
Adderall helped depression and focus tremendously but I am unsure if I can take it again due to the tongue movements.
My doctor mentioned that it is NOT TARDIVE DYSKINISIA and NOT PERMANENT but after 3 weeks it should have gone away. I am so worried about this symptom and what it's done to my social life and relationships that I cannot breathe correctly now so I'm dizzy all day AND sleeping 12 hours a night to avoid the daytime.
Do any of you have experience with EPS symptoms? I am SO SURPRISED that it happened after only 2 days of Risperdal.
I need advice and encouragement! Will this go away? When? Also, will I EVER be able to take Adderall again? I need that medicine so badly.

Try taking Benadryl,50mg every 6 hours, it will stop EPS dead in their tracks.
I dont want to seem rude, but is there a chance that this could be psychosomatic? After 3 weeks the drug has been long gone from your system.

I will start Benedryl tonight and continue in the morning.
There is a possibility this is psychosomatic. I had psychosomatic knee pain, hand pain, and a tingling in my right palm that all lasted much longer than what the doctors believed was "reasonable". Knee pain that should have lasted 2 weeks lasted 9 months and then went away when I went for a run believe it or not.
My doctor says it's not TD and isn't permanent and I got a 2nd opinion who said the same thing yet I somehow can't believe it (part of my issue).
My doctor thought Adderall was perpetuating the movements and I stopped for 3 weeks but Adderall is literally my lifeline so I've been a mess for these weeks.
I'm wondering if it's safe to resume Adderall once again? The reason I've stayed away is because I want this to heal (and it hasnt) and I felt Adderall was blocking it from healing.
Thoughts?

Could you be withdrawing from the adderal? I'd take a trial dose and see if it helps. Just a thought as not a doc. Phillipa

i guess your doctor is technically right, since 'tardive' means it doesn't show up right away. why did you discontinue adderall? they shoudl help, unless you are taking too much to the point of toxicity which would worsen it.

I discontinued Adderall because my doctor felt it could be "prolonging" the tongue symptoms. BUT, it's the one medicine in my arsenal that allows great functioning so I've been at a bad state for the past 3 weeks.
I am scared to take because of the possibility that it would hinder the progress of my tongue healing?
Am I totally wrong on this? If taking Adderall wouldn't have a bad effect on this recovery, I'd take it right now! Let me know your thoughts!

My only thoughts are that it is possible the doctor got spooked by your reaction and took the stimulant away just to declutter the polypharmacy.
Any other remaining medication on board? An AD?
My subjective opinion is that physical symptoms that last *longer than they should* are almost always labelled as psychgenic or neurotic. But that doesn't mean it's always true. There is not enough information yet about mind/body issues yet. Besides, doctors really don't know by looking at someone--at least all the time.
The tongue rolling you described has been talked about here before, but it hasn't been a personal issue, so I don't remember time taken to remit.
Have you googled the archives?
Very best to this clearing up ASAP. Will you let us know?

Hi,
I am so sorry to hear of your situation.
I had EPS (tongue and nose movements, but not tongue rolling)from Wellbutrin, believe it or not.
It did go away after several weeks off the drug.
I seem to remember that caffeine made the EPS worse.I hope it goes away! I know it's scary.

Hey Guys -
Thanks so much for your support in this. I took .25mg Adderall today and mood was improved and was able to deal with the tongue thing better. It's more difficult to speak at the moment but am seeing an expert psychopharmacologist on Wednesday who will be able to answer some questions. I can totally deal with things like this for a month or so but anything "potentially" permanent is a different story.
The fact that it could be psychosomatic is an interesting point......Want to get some second opinions before considering this point further.

The EPS symptoms and the tongue pain are still present. In public and talking to people, I am rolling my tongue a bit, which is really scary. It makes it hard to concentrate.
After ONLY 2 days of being on Risperdal, am wondering if there is a possibility of permanency?

Golfer, I hope someone who has had this experience and had it remit weighs in.
I had symptoms upon initiating abilify, but didn't recognize them for a long time (started as thumb twitching which I attributed to anxiety). When I withdrew, the symptoms subsided and vanished. Wish I could remember the time frame.
Try not to worry. I know that seems like ridiculous advice. But I try to take it myself. Again, I suggest keeping in touch with your prescribing doctor and your primary (assuming they are two separate doctors).
Have you googled sites that give user drug reviews or other sites on the net? I think it is a common sx of risperidone. What does were you at for the two days?

Hey floating bridge and others. I was only on .25 mg of risperdal for 3 days my last dose was 2 months ago and tongue movements are sticking around. Thanks for the advice on staying calm. The uncertainty of the movements scares me half to death. I'm trying to stay relaxed but some days I'm crying thinking what if this is a permanent reaction to a drug a took for only 3 days. I went to the er last night and they didn't orovide any answers. Wondering if I should go to a movement disorder specialist in new york now to provide some answers to this issue.
Does anyone know if there are people with permanent movement disorders from taking a med for 3 days?

Guys. Spoke to my doctor in length today and he said the chance of td from 2 days of risperdal is almost 1 in a billion. Like almost nonexistent. I was on .25 mg as well which is super low. He said he is baffled and in 20 years has never heard of this. He mentioned there is a very strong possibility of this being psychosomatic and persisting even after it's physically healed. I've had stuff like this in the past too. Any chance this could be psychosomatic? Thanks guys

What properties does Benadryl have that can successfully treat EPS? I really don't know. If the therapeutic property is anticholinergic, might it be preferable to use a more selective anticholinergic that is not sedating?

Well it is possible I suppose and it is certainly easier to blame the patient than blame the drug. I mean because after all... he never heard of it before, which means it could never happen...
