Nardil and early awakening

Posted by Zonked on July 25, 2011, at 7:39:54

I know this has been discussed before, and recently, but I guess I wanted one more blast of advice. What hypnotics or drugs used as such, available in the US, are best for a good night's sleep on Nardil? No matter what I take, I wake up at first light, which is usually between 5 and 6 am, usually closer to 5. Anything that doesn't upset sleep architecture, or does so minimally? I don't have as much problem with initiation as I do maintenance. I don't want to trade depression for insomnia, but if that's all I can do it's worth it. There must be a solution.

Zonked there must be cause the insomnia or early waking leads back to depression in a lot of cases. How many hours less of sleep are you getting now? We are all so different no idea as benzos kind of help me. Progesterone cream if female relaxes some people no idea what does to sleep. Phillipa

Not sure what you have tried already, but I have read numerous times of low dose Seroquel being used for MAOI induced insomnia. As my doc won't prescribe me Nardil, I'm afraid I can't speak from personal experience.

Re: Nardil and early awakening - surmontil?

Surmontil seems not to interfere with sleep architecture. I am rather afraid of D2 antagonism though. My one experience with an antipsychotic was so scary I shudder to think about it. Nevertheless, has anyone had experience with this med? Is it one of the TCAs that can be safely used with MAOIs? I don't mean what the PDR says, I mean in the hands of a knowledgeable doctor. Did anyone who has taken it develop TD or akathisia, or feel like a zombie? Any experiences with this med would be appreciated.

What about adding mirtazapine?

Zonked from what I understand you have only been on nardil for a month or 2? Correct? In my experience with the nardil the insomnia went away after 4-6 months until I increased the dosage. So if I were you Id wait and give it a couple of more months before you look into a sleep aid.

If you're waking at first light, perhaps you need a longer acting hypnotic, such as Ambien CR, temazepam (Restoril) or Flurazepam (Dalmane)

Flurazepam is longest acting, and would likely keep you alsleep to a normal hour, it would also provide anti anxiety effects (and the other usual benzo effects and side effects) throughout the following day.

zonked, I am still working this out. I wake up the same time as you, though with Xanax xr on board I am waking between 5-6 rather than 4:00.

The new doc said he couldn't see any contraindication between Emsam and ambien CR.

Do you wake during sleep as well? If so, just a suggestion to time an ambien CR to allow a few extra hours of sleep.

I'm not a z-drug pusher. Just my down and dirty advice of the moment. I'm still working my sleep to try and find the best architecture because I feel so strongly about good sleep as an aid to recovery longevity.
