I have been prescribed Tegretol for Biploar II disorder for 4 months now, and am not seeing any benefits other than it making me physically ill. I'm waiting for my blood test results, and in the meantime have been prescribed Abilify as well, but was told by my doctor to continue Tegretol unless my blood work shows that it is making me sick. Whether it's making me sick or not I really would like to discontinue it seeing as how I am not gaining any benefits from it. What are the risks of discontinuing it cold turkey as opposed to tapering off of the medication?

I would always advise wean off. Do you blood levels if high or low indicated the med could be making you sick? Phillipa

i would not advise quitting cold turkey--had to stop it for a week 600 mg ---would advise lowering it in increments if you could---what is your theurapeutic level

Given that its an anticonvulsant, stopping it cold turkey could potentialy cause a grand mal seisure - so taper it off over say 2 weeks.
