What do you think is decent sleep good mania protection?
That would be meds like trazodone, neurontin, baclofen, weak antipsychotic etc etc.

yes this type of thing. It seems insomnia is both a symptom of mania and a cause of it right?

Got these in place although i will touch antipsychotics only as last resort.. Thing is last time on Nardil i went a little manicky/paranoid..

You are very right
My paranoia and euphoria are generally accelerated with lack of sleep. I am typically a sleepy head. 10 hours isn't odd for me. As an episode sets in my time in bed will decline over 6 weeks or so untill I'm basically taking four hour naps in between the frenzy of activity and goal directed stuff.
By the time it turns on me and I go into a mixed kind of dysphoric hypomania I might not sleep for a couple of days. AP's are the only thing that seems to take the wind out of my sails and stabilize me. I take resiridone as maintenance to keep some balance however I have always wonders if we are missing the mark with my stabilizers if I still need an AP. I kind of think Big pharma has curved the use of atypicals for maintenance. It use to be straight lithium or valporate. Or maybe the widespread use of antidepressants has cause our conditions to kind of morph.
Thoughts?

My doc always stressed good sleep - at least 7 hours worth of good deep sleep. They say if you don't get good sleep you are more likely to experience mood issues.
I know with me that is true. You can only go so long on bad sleep before you have mania or depression.
Sleep and exercise are very, very important.

Yeah, sleep is very important. I'd say this is my biggest issue. I still havn't figured out why my sleep (seemingly without provocation) becomes so messed up.
My pattern is:
a) 1 day good sleep (8-9 hours)
b) Next day extreme fatigue (must nap for ~2 hours)
c) Insomnia that night (maybe 4 hours of sleep)
d) Next day awake whole day (no naps, dysphoric)
e) back to a)

I would probably use melatonin, since it is correcting a deficiency (you are deficient unless you don't encounter any artificial light post-sunset)
and if you wake, read a dull book meditate, and then go back to bed when you can.
