seroquel for anxiety

Posted by emmanuel98 on June 14, 2011, at 19:30:21

For the last two weeks, for reasons that I don't fully understand, I have been consumed by terrible, constant anxiety. It is a horrible feeling and makes it difficult to function.

My p-doc doesn't want to give me benzos because I have had problems with addiction and drug abuse (opiates). So he prescribed 25-50mg seroquel. I took 25 mg on Saturday and slept the whole day. I'm not sure if it was because the seroquel sedated me or because, in the absence of anxiety, the depression I suffer just took over, but I've been wary about taking it since.

Today my therapist said I needed to try it and get this anxiety under control, so I took half a pill (12.5 mg) in her office. An hour later, I felt calmer and was a little spacey but not sedated and able to drive.

Was this the seroquel? Will my body get used to it so I don't get spacey or sedated? I know this is a very low dose, so is this a real calming effect or just placebo/coincidence?

Seroquel is highly sedating, especialy at first.....25-50mg doses are commonly used as a sleeping pill. You could try taking 12.5mg till your body adjusts, then 25mg. Yo will probably need to take it three times a day for anxiety.

Risperidone is another non addictive drug that is highly effective for anxiety and is much less sedating - maybe speak to your doctor about a trial of that? A normal dose would be 0.5mg at night for 2 nights, then 1mg at night.

if super low dose seroquel helps your anxiety, you may want to try hydroxyzine. It might be less sedating, plus its cheap.

I took risperidone once for a month and gained 15 pounds. I loved it. It made me feel okay for the first time in my life. I switched to abilify and gained 2 pounds a week. I went on and off AAPs and gained 50 pounds in a year and a half. I have only recently lost 40 of those pounds, so I am very wary of any AAPs including seroquel, which I never tried. But I figure 25 mg should be okay. I did find the anxiety returning after about 6 hours.

Thanks. I have good insurance, so cost isn't really an issue (except for the insurance company), but I will ask my p-doc about this. Anything I take has to be okay with MAOI's, since I take parnate for depression.

12.5 mg knocked me out but could wake up but no anxiety. Could it be the parnate? Phillipa

Given the issues with weight gain with atypical antipsychotics, then I'd agree with christ, Hydroxyzine in a dose of 50mg three times a day would be worth trying.

Another option would be Buspar 15-30mg twice a day.

Quietipine is just as likely to cause weight gain as the other atypicals unfortunatly. Buspar wont.

Emmanuel,

I am glad you've found something for anxiety. That a positive piece.

Warmly,

This is a story I may (or may not) have relayed to PB in the past:

I was given 25mg seroquel tablets for insomnia many years ago by a doctor. 1/4 of ONE of those pills (6.25mg) not only knocked me out, but made me feel like a zombie for the following TWO days. I literally felt like a slow, emotionless robot-zombie and couldn't *wait* until that stuff was out of my system.

After doing more research, I vowed never again to put an antipsychotic in my body unless I developed psychosis. (Thank god I don't have to deal with that, depression + anxiety are bad enough!)

Did you get dry peeling lips for about a week after taking the dose that's what happened to me. Phillipa
