I've been on Wellbutrin for 3 or 4 weeks and it caused too much anxiety so I had to stop. The question is what now? My pdoc thought of lithium and the Tegretol I'm already on. The problem is depression is my primary symptom. Any thoughts on that? I once had pretty good luck with paxil, how about paxil and Tegretol? Don't know what to do.

Markwell same thing happened to me with wellbutrin. Paxil did work for me at l0mg first ad. Are you anxious? If so add a benzo for start up there is also pexeva long acting. Phillipa

Markwell, besides the anxiety, did the Wellbutrin have any AD effect or help with energy.
I think it's helpful to analyze one's response and see what part worked, what didn't.
I assume effexor would cause cycling?
And your idea about Paxil could be perfectly sound. I just don't know.
And I know I keep asking. Forgive me if you've answered and I missed it: have you looked at the maoi's?
Sorry you are having such a time with this.

I didn't get any ad effect from Wellbutrin. I haven't asked about maoi but not sure how that goes with bipolar. I'll ask, the only concern is when insomnia is an issue I usually don't fare well, but I'll ask. Thanks

Why did you stop Paxil + Trgretol if it was working?
A very good antidepressant combo is sertraline (Zoloft) plus nortriptyline (Pamelor, Allgeron)
You'd need to add a mood stabaliser to the cocktail, but it can be extremely effective
Anafranil (clomipramine) would also be well worth a shor

I never tried Tegretol and paxil. I was taking paxil alone when I had my first manic episode. Paxil worked pretty good for me for a number of years but I had an awful time starting and stopping it.

If you need a good antidepressant combo, ask your doc if you can try Zoloft (say 50mg at night) and nortriptyline (say 75mg at night) together with whatever mood stabaliser works best for you, Tegretol, Depakote, whatever.
The Zoloft works on Seretonin, the nortriptyline works on noradrenalin, thus delivering an "one-two" knockout punch to depression.
If your doctor doesnt want to prescribe two antidepressants, then either Cymbalta or Effexor would be reasonable ones to try.
This is the end of the thread.
