with the abilify the TD did not start immediatly or end immediatly. But after a year or so it did go away. I think thats TD.

That sounds about right. What were the involuntary muscle movements that you experienced?

TD with Abilify is thought to be rare. Akathisia is more common.

The first couple times I took Abilify I took it with other meds (high dose Adderall, for instance) and I think I had some sort of tardive weirdness that developed. After a couple years and a nervous breakdown, the movements resolved.

Did you also experience any of the following?

Dry mouth?
Heart palpitations?
Increased heart rate?
Constipation?
Acid stomach?
Nasal congestion?
Anxiety / "Wired"?
Dizziness / Postural hypotension / Syncope?
Fluctuating body temperature?
Headaches?
Mydriasis?

Did these things occur along with the shaking hands?

Although tardive dyskinesia and tics are often treated with Abilify and a few other APs, there are infrequent reports of these drugs producing tics. This is an atypical (parodoxical) presentation.

The diagnosis of TD is rather precise. Symptoms include:

Involuntary and repetitive movements of the body;
Grimacing, tongue twitching and protrusion;
Lip smacking, puckering and pursing and blinking, and raising eyebrows;
Rapid movements of the arms, legs and trunk;
Involuntary movements of the fingers as though playing an invisible guitar or piano.

The involuntary movements of TD more often involves muscles located at the head and neck.

Shaking hands in TD occurs with a fixed pose of the fingers. The thumb and forefinger must remain in contact at their ends.

I think the term "Tardive Dyskinesia" is used too loosely and is overdiagnosed by posters on Psycho-Babble. It would be interesting to note who has been diagnosed with TD by their doctor.

Yes. I had anxiety, dizzyness, fluctuating body temp. I was so dizzy I could not stand up without almost passing out. Think I was in a cold sweat.

I take cogentin now. If I stop taking it my hands are more shaky. Supposidly its to keep perphenazine from giving me TD. But I'm wondering if its left over from abilify?

cogentin won't stop you from getting TD. It will suppress EPS in the short term, but its ineffective for most cases of established TD.

That said, the more I read on the subject the more it seems that there's a whole range of tardive stuff that psychiatry either doesn't acknowledge or is only beginning to acknowledge. Tardive tics, tardive psychosis, tardive akathisia...it wouldn't surprise me if the Abilify did do *something*, even if it didn't present as "classical" TD. Also, Abilify doesn't work like other antipsychotics, so I wouldn't be surprised if 10 years from now some (hopefully not many) Abilify patients have unusual tardive syndromes.

I've been taking cogentin for about 3 years now. I stoped taking it for a week and a half and slowly the shakies came. I went back on it and it went away. I wonder if it works because I stoped the abilify.

That sounds like the right symptoms. But it was from abilify, and went away when I stoped the abilify

I really don't know if what you experienced was EPS (not tardive) or dysautonomia. Did you feel better while on Abilify?

Of all the APs that you have taken, which of them have helped, even if only partially or briefly?

Are you still taking Seroquel?

I had those same problems. I went as high as 15mg. Doc wanted me to go up to 30 to see if that made me better. I knew I would simply crack if I did that. Don't remember how I finaly convinced him to get me off it and back on zyprexa.

Other side effects of abilify were, severe dizzyness, low blood sugars so low that I had to constantly eat sugar.
