I need medication but have not been able to start anything for almost a year out of fear. Has anyone had this problem and how did you overcome it?
Thank you.

Med-phobia can work to your advantage. I wish I'd been less willing to try whatever brand new pill my shrinks wanted to Rx.
I'd just do this (it helped me, anyway): make a list of your problems. Do some research and see what will actually respond to meds and what will need some other sort of intervention (supplements, self-help, therapy, etc.) to deal with (or that you just have to accept).
Tell your shrink going in that you want to keep it simple. I don't know why polypharmacy is all the rage, but lots of people are on way too many meds. I've gone from being a 6 meds a day Mental Patient to a 2 meds a day Functioning Individual. You should be able to skip over the over-medicated mental patient part and go straight into the Doing Better/Functioning Individual category soon.
If you feel so inclined (I'd recommend it, personally), do some google-ing on what med(s) would help your core issue(s). Again, I'd personally recommend a 2-3 medication cap, but that's just me. Also be firm with your shrink of meds you WILL NOT take, based on side effects and/or personal experiences (or cost, if that's an issue for you).
Its understandable to be "med-phobic"; this is your brain and you should protect it; if only shrinks thought that way...
All you have to do is use your (not entirely irrational) fear to produce a good relationship with your pdoc and a good med program, and you're all set.Good luck!

I was so med phobic that when my thyroid went I almost vomited the first synthroid pill. It's tough. Phillipa

I think a psychologist would be able to help.

I got out of my med phobia simply by taking the plunge. In the space of a year I ended up on almost all the SSRIs, Atypical Antipsychotics and just about everything prescribed to treat OCD as an augmenter. Once you've been through the worst side effects of any drug, you become tolerant.
