What chains carry Gavis/Novel Nardil?

Posted by zonked on June 1, 2011, at 15:10:45

Hi folks:

Appointment went OK. I am to start Nardil (and yes, I mean as in Greenstone, which is Pfizer in a different bottle) tomorrow at 45 tid (half the dose that worked for me). Doc wants me to follow up sooner rather than later, which I will do.

Does anyone know any national (US) chains that carry Gavis Nardil or will order it? Struck out at both Walgreens and CVS - Greenstone (Pfizer) only.

Doc wants me to stay on Klonopin for now, although at a lower dose. If it continues to make the depression worse or make me feel flat, I will bring up Xanax again since it *never* did that to me.

OK so maybe following up to my own post is a bit lame, but I have some hope now.

I thought for the heck of it, does anyone want to
share their antidepressant kick in stories?

I remember when I started Nardil (for the first time) it was out of desperation... I *wish* I'd kept a journal of those times, so I knew at what day and what dosage this happened....it seems that this happened within 2 weeks, whatever the dosage was.

I was driving on my way home from work, and "One More Time" by Daft Punk came on the radio (not like, my favorite song ever, but good enough!) and I actually enjoyed it. I was so thrilled to actually feel *something* other than dread and exhaustion I sang along the whole way home...

I'm hopeful I can get there again. Hopefully, those smelly little orange pills made in France (eau de phenelzine?) can help get me "there" as they have before. I pick up my script tomorrow.

Any particular reason you're fixed on getting that brand?

I'd go to an independant pharmacy, and ask the pharmacist to order it in for you, explaining your reasons.... most would be happy to help out.

Oh, you know, there are anecdotal reports that the Gavis Nardil might work better (the excipients are different); then again, there are reports that it's the same or worse than the Pfizer brand.

If you are scratching your head, google: "2003 nardil change" and you'll see why I'm curious. There are scores of people who swear Nardil became less effective after an excipient and manufacturing change in 2003. (Pfizer was until recently the sole supplier of Nardil.)

It's not a deal maker or breaker though, I'm just glad to be going back on it again. I started Nardil in 2007, when only the brand was available, and it worked for me.

Independent pharmacy, hrmmm. Might be worth a try for my next refill. I'll check Yelp to see what's around.

my first day on ritalin i took a deep breath in and as I exhaled my shoulders dropped, both mind and body became relaxed and I said "oh, this is what normal people feel like"

Eh, well, Greenstone is just Pfizer - in this case it was Greenstone that I *didn't* want. But I don't really care all that much =)

Now, if it were a Pfizer product without questionable efficacy (Xanax, Neurontin) then I would want nothing *but* Greenstone. (confusing, I know!)

I hail from California...

I get my generic Gavis phenelzine at Rite-Aide.

CORRECTION: I *did* get Gavis Nardil/phenelzine

Odd. Even though CVS told me that they only saw Pfizer and Greenstone (identical to Pfizer) in their computer, when I picked up my script today it was, indeed, Gavis brand. The bottle says MFR: GAVIS PHARMACEUTICALS and the imprint code for Gavis' phenelzine (NL 360) match the tablets.

The strange thing is, they look more or less identical to the Pfizer tabs otherwise - and even have the same skunky perfume smell!

Since I required 90mg for efficacy in the past and doc has me only on 45 now, I hope to see the doc in about two weeks for an increase if necessary. I anticipate that it will be...

You can order Gavis Nardil from Target and pick it up the next day. They stock the Gavis in the Target warehouses so it is easily available. The price is good at around $80 for 120 tabs. Much less if you have insurance.
