I suffer from the holy trinity of depression, anxiety and panic disorder.
I was taking Zoloft 100mg/day, Edronax 4mg bd and Xanax 1mg tid, but was still getting symptoms..... I recently added risperidone 1mg nocte and it has made a big difference, I feel better, and have also managed to drop the Xanax back to 1mg twice a day. So, my question is, what is the risk of tardive dyskensia with a low dose of risperidone taken at night over a longer timeframe, say 1-2 years? I assume it is lower than low dose phenothiazines or holoperidol, which themselves had a low risk at these doses, so I'm not particularly worried, just curious.

hey. I don't know how to calculate it...I think its just something you're going to have to watch out for. Some docs say taking high dose antioxidants (c,e,niacinamide,b6) can help reduce the risk.
smoking=probably higher risk (same with drug and alcohol abuse)
female=higher risk (risk goes up with advancing age)
mood disorder= higher risk than schizophrenia
early EPS=higher risk than if not EPS present
Anyway, you do what you gotta do to function...just keep an eye out for tongue darting and maybe take a break periodically to see if you actually still need the risperdal; you might only need the antipsychotic for a little while.
Good luck!

Yeah, I'll certainly be keeping an eye out for the tounge stuff, and I'll also try and discontinue periodicaly (after 6 months), maybe take a 4 week break after 6 months even if I do still feel the need for it. Life isnt absolutly unbareable without it, just more plesant with it
Oh for the days when my medicine cabinet consisted of a pack of 24 ibuprofen, a box of cold capsules, some bandaids and a tun of hair wax!

Just found an article in a mainstream medical journal that stated that risperidone at doses of less than 6mg per day is unlikely to cause EP disturbances or tardive dyskensia, so I am going to assume that 1mg per day is a safe dose.

I believe the risk of TD is very low at that low dosage. What you have to watch out for are the possible adverse effects on your body. Weight gain seems inevitable. Your risk of developing diabetes is also significantly increased at that does. I'm not certain but it seems like my blood glucose was raised by quite a few points when I was on it. Postural hypotension is normal but can catch you by surprise if you don't look out for it. But Risperdal is a very good drug IMO - a great adjunct to ADs. It can help with anxiety and obsessive-type thoughts and sleep problems.
