Does anyone know if benzos - such as diazepam - have any anti-anxiety effects once tolerance kicks in??
Would 10-15mg of diazepam still have an anxiolytic effect after taking it daily for say one month??
Thanks

Maybe I'm lucky as took valium or another benzo for 41 years. Worked fine til about 5 years ago and then tolerance. I have no idea if it does anything other than prevent withdrawal which I tend to not get as when started the valium was l5mg and with that miltown which after a few years just stopped. No side effects just didn't need it. Phillipa ps I cutting down now as why take it?

there should be little tolerance to the anxiolytic effect. The hypnotic effect has signifcant tolerance.

Benzos are only so-so at preventing anxiety in my experience. I used to take Klonopin, and the side effects of being less mentally sharp, and disinhibited behavior (at higher doses) were more robust than the anxiolytic effect. At a dose that kept side effects under control, it did not abolish all anxiety.
I didn't have any problems with addiction and wanting to increase the dose. My friend was taking the 2mg pills in large quantities and got into all kinds of trouble, including a DUI. But he was reckless by nature and didn't even attempt to be responsible.

I in all honesty wonder why 5mg of valium three times a day and miltown and drinking 3 beers at night gave me energy? Anyone seriously have any thoughts on this? I'm preplexed!!!! Phillipa

A lot of drugs can produce what are called paradoxical reactions. The drug causes the opposite of the expected effect.

Think is though the energy came from being totally relaxed as knew their was something that could always rid me of the panic that was so horrible. Now they just seem to do nothing. Phillipa

That makes sense, too. People used to refer to alcohol as a "stimulant," even though we know it as a depressant. Probably because it made people act boisterous.

And beer or wine also gave me energy at the end of a day 4-5 of them. And calmed me down. Now don't drink at all. Phillipa
