Benzos are still popular and they're very effective. BuSpar isn't as effective, but can be quite helpful. Personally, I've gotten a lot better since adding 20mgs Celexa to my 30mgs Abilify.

Benzos were extremly effective for me for over 20 years. Now they make me tired. But for all those years removed anxiety so was feeling great all the time. Phillipa

I'm on benzos for anxiety, for the long-term.
And atenolol. It does a pretty amazing job on breakthrough physical symptoms - racing heart etc.

It really depends on the type of anxiety.

Well, this is my first go at meds so I cannot give you any comparisons, but from my little bit of experience I can say that alprazolam (generic Xanax...a benzo) works very well to relieve anxiety and constant negative cyclical thought patterns.
I started at 0.25 mg 2x/day, and am up at 4x a day. It is great when it works...for me I have timed it to see exactly how long it takes to be effective (15 min) and how long it lasts in a stressful situation (3 hours 20 min)...but, I also know/feel exactly when it stops working too. In all honesty, in my current high stress situation, 0.25mg barely touches me, so I have increased it to 0.5 mg 2x/day (could be from change in generic brands from Pure Pac to Mylan??)...right now, that seems to work MUCH better/smoother for me (for now).
Apparently there are some pretty nasty withdrawal effects with benzos and physiological dependency on the drug, which make me a tad nervous. So, when I have time to not worry about commitments, pdoc is going to have me try a longer acting benzo like Klonopin (it can be overly sedating in some cases).
