I'm planning a trip which includes flying. I'm terrified of flying, although I have never done it. Thinking of combining a sleeping pill with atenolol, any ideas?
Thanks.

Sleeping pills are not recommended on long haul flights due to risk of deep vein thrombosis.
I usually take Valium and a glass of wine before boarding.

Yeah, some wine might be a good idea (red wine for sedative and blood thinning effects).
Some ativan might be a good option too.

Whenever I fly, my p-doc writes a prescription for 4 valium tabs. No more because he doesn't like giving me addictive drugs, since I have a history of drug and alcohol abuse. The valium really helps. It helps with jet lag, too.

I agree. Get prescription for 4-5 valium. And although I don't recommend drinking and meds ... a little red wine wouldn't hurt either.

I have a really intense fear of flying. So I take ativan, I'm completely chilled out and fully functional BUT a bit forgetful (those 9-10 hour flights suddenly don't seem so long haha)

If you're coming to England, do stop by :)
Otherwise, take some extra clonazepam. Flying can be exciting, so try to look at it that way. After all, it's amazing that it's even possible.
I've always found beta blockers worthless for anxiety. Some people find them useful for cardiac symptoms, which I don't have, so there you go.

LOL, of course :) But we are thinking about Spain but it isn't decided yet.

Please don't post anything that could lead others to feel accused or put down.
But please don't take this personally, either, this doesn't mean I don't like you or think you're a bad person, and I'm sorry if this hurts you.
More information about posting policies and tips on alternative ways to express yourself, including a link to a nice post by Dinah on I-statements, are in the FAQ:
http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/faq.html#civil
http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/faq.html#enforceLinkadge, I'm also sorry if you felt hurt.
Follow-ups regarding these issues should be redirected to Psycho-Babble Administration. They, as well as replies to the above post, should of course themselves be civil.
Thanks,
Bob

Are you kidding me? I was being completely serious here!
Taking alcohol with a benzodiazapine is marginally dangerous if it is done the right way around. Suppose you take an initial dose of ativan (0.25-0.5mg) before entering the plane. This is only going to produce marginal sedation. After waiting 30-60 min, I would consider it completely safe to start sipping some red wine if you are still on edge.
You're really just concerned about additive sedation, this only happens when you start drinking and downing pills at a rate at which your brain cannot adjust and gague the level of sedation.
A 8oz glass of red wine approx = 0.5 mg of ativan. So whats the difference between taking 0.5 ativan + red wine vs. 1mg of ativan?

...if you can afford it at on-flight prices.
