Has anyone with schiophrenia (or other psychotic disorder) noticed that coffee seems to posess antipsychotic qualities?

I haven't noticed that. Coffee boosts my mood, but too much gives me anxiety and low-grade paranoia; the ill-effects are more pronounced if I've been running on little or no sleep.

No antipsychotics but coffee alone can't drink too stimulating for me. Phillipa

I drink a lot of coffee. It deffinately brightens my mood. However brewing it at home is very important. I use to drink Starbucks and that stuff is extremely potent. 440mg Caffiene for a large which is what I drank. I now drink basic Folgers. Always have a pot on through out the day. I feel great. Not amped and jittery like Starbucks or energy drinks.
I find it can make me a little boisterous and my wife says I talk louder but that's the fun in it! It beats taking a complex cocktail to trying and find spunk through out the day.
Sorry for the long post : )

Starbucks is that potent as after about 25 years had the first panic attack after drinking an iced large Starbucks. I used to grind own beans and brew own coffee and could drink a full pot no anxiety. So all these years I've gone without coffee out of fear of same is it was Starbucks???? Phillipa

Sounds like a contraindication to me, esp in the long term. Am I missin something? I dont have any psychotic type disorder but I cant see a logical benifit.

I think mixing neuroleptics plus stimulants can sometimes be helpful, not so much for people with schizophrenia or hardcore mood disorders w/ a psychotic component, but maybe for milder problems.
History Lesson: Back in the 40s-60s/70s, there were a number of products on the market that contained some sort of tranquilizer (low-dose phenothiazine or something else, like meprobamate or a barbiturate) plus an amphetamine of some sort (mostly dexedrine, sometimes methamphetamine).
These products were usually aimed at people w/ mixed anxiety+depression, people who needed a diet pill but couldn't handle amphetamine by itself, or people who had anxiety/panic reaction to stimulants. They fell from favor in the 70s and were taken off the market in the early 80s b/c the FDA had a little fit about overuse of amphetamines.
Some products from back then included: ThoraDex, Eskatrol, Stelladex, and the (in)famous Dexamyl, a favorite of Ayn Rand.

Most theory is bunk.
I'm not talking about biochemicals here. I am asking about people who have been experiencing some form of psychosis, who get some form of relief by drinking moderate amounts of coffee.

> LinkadgeDespite what you're asking, I doubt many people in your case would find it helpfull. I mean, you can give someone a panic attack with the right dose, near 500mg which aint that much. Most hard office workers drink that in a day. Perhapse you'll prove me wrong. If your gonna use caffiene then I really do hope it helps.
