hypomania cause: caffeine or lexapro or both? :)

Posted by TriedEveryMedication on December 3, 2010, at 10:41:46

Hi Babblers,

Recently, I'm pretty sure I had a hypomanic episode. I would spend about 16 hours a day posting on some social internet site, not doing my work, etc.

I was taking 10mg of lexapro at the time. Initially, I thought it was the lexapro that did this. But concurrently I was guzzling a lot of espressos and coffee - 5 or 6 a day.

And I really never drank coffee before in my life.

I've since swapped the lexapro for effexor and cut way back on the coffee.

Anyway - I started thinking - maybe it was the caffeine that did this to me? Or the confluence of the two?

I know it is probably impossible to know, but what do you think was more likely the cause?

Thank you :)

That doesnt sound particulary hypomanic.

And if you never drink coffee, suddenly overloading it can be very stimulating.

I actually believe Lexapro did something similar to me at higher doses. I would also spend literally 16 hours a day on social sites, or goofing off online, and not doing my work. I wasn't happy - far from it - but I couldn't concentrate on anything cognitive and I didn't really care enough to be worried about my work. It seems to have decreased as I've been decreasing my dose.

Coffee I don't drink as panic resulted from it. But there were also times when coffee did nothing to me but then wasn't either time on an ad. I feel sometimes that what's going on in life can effect it. Phillipa

The only problem I got with caffeine at high doses (I seem to have developed a high tolerance now though) was irritability, attempting to concentrate but being unable to, jittering and poor memory of the events that occurred.
