low dose Seroquel be effective?

Posted by ICU812 on October 16, 2010, at 21:54:54

Hi Guys
Just wanted to pass this by you
I am bipolar. Currently on Lithium 1000mg, Tegretol 800mg, Seroquel 200mg and Zoloft 100mg.
I am a bit horrified about the polypharmacy, but it seems to be keeping everything rather steady.
I'm wanting to know how effective is Seroquel at low doses??
My psychiatrist thinks so.
Has anyone experiences of low doses that are effective??
Thanks for your ideas

I don't have an idea just see your question has gone unanswered. If the combo you are on is working well who wants to lower the seroquel you or the pdoc? Phillipa

Just to shed more light on what is happening. I seem to have frequent cycles and was on a teeny dose of Risperdal 0.5mg plus mood stabilisers. I cycled into a more severe depression and in hospital was changed to Seroquel (200mg) plus Sertraline (75mg) as well as the usual mood stabilisers. Interestingly I didn't switch on the SSRI as I often do. I did some research and could only find one study that supports low/mid dose Seroquel with mood stabilisers for bipolar. Most other research supports low dose for off label use - OCD,PTSD, insomnia and anxiety. The recommended dose for maintenance with Lithium is 400 - 800mg.
As I'm on 200mg I asked my pdoc about this and he said what I'm on should help stabilise things. Ok, I trust him, so far so good, and I'm keeping my fingers crossed. But I would really like to hear from some success stories with Seoquel, I have had a bad run lately. I appreciate your thoughts, Sam

A 25 mg dose of Seroquel put me in a tripped out dreamy state and then knocked me out for a few hours, this was in the midst of a major major mixed episode.

If your doctor says a lower dose of Seroquel could work, you should try it and see if you feel better. With APs, the lower the effective dose, the better IMO.
