This is for all the boys and girls who have had experience with the MAOI's. I think there are alot of knowledgeable people on this board. I will possibly be starting Parnate soon. I chose that over Nardil for it's overall profile. The main concern I have is the severe insomnia people have had issues with. What meds. do you recommend for a decent nights sleep? I know taking the doses earlier than later may help. But any suggestions would be helpful. I really can't function on lack of sleep!
I appreciate any and all responses.
Thanks

It seems to be a pretty common problem with parnate, but, not everybody has insomnia.
25mg of seroquel worked for me, but I was only on 40mg of parnate.

Yeah it seems like people taking lower doses (40 mg or lower) have less of a problem. I am just hesitant taking a anti-psychotic. Although, I know people that do use it for sleep. Did you try anything else(trazadone, eszopiclone)before using seroquel?

No, I didn't try trazodone. Both trazodone and seroquel have some next day effect, but I prefer that of seroquel.
I'm sure that zopiclone would have worked (since it works for my regular insomnia very well) it might be an option, but perhaps not ideal for long term use?
Something like cyproheptadine might help too.

I was on Paranate for 2 years with severe insomnia. The best solution for me was 25mg-100mg of seroquel. Unfortunately it can make you hungry and gain weight. For me Parnate was quite activating so after a couple months seroquel had no next day drowsiness. (I) would take a couple days of seroquel vacation and take diphenhydramine so I didnt gain to much weight from seroquel, diphenhydramine works well for sleep but only for a few days. If you exercise you should be just fine for the seroquel weight gain. Remember, lower doses of Seroquel give nearly the same sleep benefit as higher dosages.

I had awful insomnia when I started parnate. Taking dosages earlier had absolutely no effect. Despite the 3x/day dosing schedule, the fact is that the effect on neurotransmitters is long lasting. I am also on perphenazine 12mg and I take 8mg half an hour before bed. I also take 100mg trazadone and 2mg ativan. With this combo, I've had no trouble with insomnia anymore.
I have to tell you that this is the only lasting side effect I've had from parnate. I've been taking it for over a year and have had no depression.
This is the end of the thread.
