The question is, how to tailor medication to treat just the amygdala?

Phillipa, please tell me whnat dose of benzo, which one and how long you have taken for? I have taken Ativan, 3 mg for about 12 years and now I am getting lots of stick for it from docs who put me on it to take me off it. Confused. It has helped. But now I am afraid I am doomed to die young because of my benzos. I guess I am looking for any sign of hope.

You might want to give gabapentin (Neurontin) a quick trial. Depending on how fast you titrate up in dosage, you should know within two weeks if it will be helpful. There is also tiagabine (Gabitril). Tiagabine is an unpredictable drug in that it can, in a minority of people, produce depression, anxiety, insomnia, and seizures. However, its property of GABA reuptake inhibition often yields a reduction in amygdala activity and an anxiolytic effect.

Hi 40 years on and off as at times didn't need them. Took valium, ativan, xanax, tried klonopin depressing for me. Now take 5mg of valium and.75 of xanax weaning down. Don't need as much. I have an older doc they still believe in benzos or a lot do. What state or country you in. You can also babblemail me. I feel they are very safe taken as prescribed. I've always taken less. Hi Phillipa

Tried to babblemail you but couldn't get through.

Thank you so much for your reply. Do you think 1 mg 3 times a day is a lot? It's Ativan. Everyone seems so anti-benzo but they still want to put me on other drugs for life and I don't see why being on a benzo is worse. I've been on it for about 12 years now. Have never asked for more.

Anything, absolutely anything, you have to say about benzo safety is of interest to me. Have you ever done of a very elderly person who has been on a benzo a lot of their life? I am wondering if anyone survives on psych meds to a nice old age.

I love life!

Appreciate your time and thoughts so much.

I can say definitely yes as when nursing so many elderly women especially would ask for their "nerve pill" they were sharp as tacks no cognitive dulling. And I bet since I was 40's at the time they had started off on harder meds like miltown, and barbituates. I've been on them for 40 years now and I feel they are the safest meds. As long as you don't increase dose not going to get diabetes and other things from them. I wish you would turn on your babblemail or try babbling me again click on my name it's in a color and then write message and at the very bottom of page hit enter and it should say babblemail has been sent. Michael, I couldn't get your link to work. Scott, is that the link you posted.

Well, it's news to me. Wonder if it might reduce the severity of ptsd triggering...?
