Thinking of starting Nardil

Posted by nick2010 on October 10, 2010, at 11:26:19

Hello,

Good forum by the way very informative, I was wondering if anyone could answer a few questions which I cannot seem to find the answers to about Nardil.

I have tried tranylcypromine for a few weeks and thought it was great although almost slightly too dopamergenic(?) but I stopped due to headaches and fear of dietary restrictions etc. I am experimenting with some of the newer meds but they just dont seem to work as well as maoi and my psychiatrist keeps reccomending to me that I try nardil as it is good for anxiety and depression and has less chance of hypertensive crisis, So my questions are....

1) How much lower is the risk of hypertensive reactions with nardil over parnate, is it quite a lot more forgiving if you were to eat something by mistake?

2) If i was to take a quite low dose eg. 30mg per day how bad are the side effects of weight gain and anorgasmia likely to be? Are they dose dependant and also do they go away with time?

3) How do you think Nardil would campare to Escitalopram + Bupropion Combo ( neither work that well alone for me bupropion is too anxiety inducing and escitalopram is too numbing but I thought may work well in combo?)

Thanks for your help any responses appreciated from peope with previous experience :).

Nick,

1) I haven't been on Parnate and don't know as much about it, but unless your doctor has clinical experience to show otherwise, I would imagine they have the same risk. However, know that the diet is not as extreme as the "standard pharmacy/FDA contraindications" state. You CAN eat things like yogurt, wine. Everyone is different. For me monterey jack cheese causes me a reaction.

2) Low dose might = low response. 45-60mg is the standard dose. Anyhow, on 30mg you will feel various side effects. However, they DO go away with time, for the most part. For some they all go away.

3) I don't think you can really compare Nardil with that combo. Nardil operates in its own unique way. For me it was the only thing that really worked. Bupropion may increase anxiety and agitation, so no use in taking that.

Hmm thanks for the replies, I suppose if the risk is similar taking nardil vs parnate of hypertensive crisis then I may as well take the one without the anorgasmia, weight gain and hypotension! (parnate) any more input on my original question people?
