2 grams, 3x dailiy, for a total of 6 grams. It helps a lot. I also take abilify.

I have had some success with a couple of grammes of GABA powder under the tongue at bedtime.
It actually does work (even though some people say it does not, being allegedly too large to cross the BBB) and deepens sleep somewhat, making the next day easier.

I'm sorry to hear that the anxiety is so bad. You should come off the Xanax VERY slowly. Seriously, coming off can be hell. Good luck.

I think was saying that the Xanax was making her anxiety worse and that is why she wants to come off it.

Sorry Phillipa and Maxime, I did not see this until now.
Yes Maxime you are correct. Tolerance does develop often to benzos, and I feel as though I might be tolerant after 5 years on 1.5 mg, (where the dosage either needs to be increased, or decide to taper off the drug).
My psychiatrist surprised me tonight by actually calling me at home. I think she read my email or listened to my voicemail and decided I sounded pretty desperate. I was. She said it would be okay to try the niacinamide, as I am resisting more pharmacuticals now. So tomorrow I'll buy it with some B-complex vitamins and see how that does.
I'll keep you all posted. I know the hell of xanax withdrawal; actually I tapered from 3mg. -equivalent of 60mg.. valium, to 1.5 mg. equivalent of 30mg. valium. I used the Ashton crossover slowly to valium and that was a big mistake. I cannot tolerate valium; way too depressing. I tapered off xanax alone years ago and did not have nearly as hard of a time as tapering valium.
I am not looking to taper off xanax, (can't bear the thought of withdrawals again) just to supplement it and hopefully knock out the anxiety with the niacinamide. I have been about paralyzed with depression and fears which come on me almost every day.
Thanks for your concern,
Abby

Forgot to mention. When you are coming of a benzo and things get really bad. just break off or bite off a very small portion of the Xanax. Even if you have to do this a couple of time a day, so be it. It will help. When I was coming off Xanax it was the WORST. I was even throwing up etc. Not pleasant. You have to come off the med really slowly. I feel for you, I truly do.

high doses of niacinamide (several grams per day) can help you relax. I read somewhere that it appears to work through some of the same mechanisms that benzos work through.
The niacinamide helps me relax and makes my medication (Abilify) work better at keeping things manageable. The niacinamide also seems to help my skin (weirdly enough, niacinamide has become a popular ingredient in skin care recently; my rosacea responds well to high doses of oral niacinamide).
I've found in the past that using niacinamide along with a benzo makes both substances work better; you get more mileage out of the benzo and benzo potentiates the anxiolytic effects of the niacinamide.

Thank you, that is really interesting. Maybe I will try taking some at night to help me relax so that I can sleep.

Yes I have heard the same thing about Niacinamide being as effective as a benzodiazepine! What a claim! Although I am not so sure it is that powerful, my doctor told me to give it a try. It supposedly does behave the same as a benzo but is not addictive. And it can help someone who is tapering down a benzo.
I am not so sure I will go completely off the xanax, but I hope to cut down by 1mg. down to half a mg. Hoping this will work. I heard that you also need to take a B-complex with it to enable it to be effective.

I find niacin easier to tollerate than benzos. I don't get depression on it, and it can work suprisingly well.
Not everybody develops tollerance to benzos though, at least not overnight for everbody.
I took clonazepam 1mg for about a year with pretty consistent anxiety effects. I came off it because of depression, not lack of effect.
I think the tollerance to benzos is overplayed a little because of the desire to switch people to "less addicting SSRIs"

What dosage do you need to feel a positive effect. I know that it will be different for everyone, but I am just looking for a ball park figure.

500 milligrams--2 grams 3x daily. Some people--particularly those with schizophrenia--can take more.
This is the end of the thread.
