whoops, should I be worried?

Posted by Maxime on September 18, 2010, at 10:16:24

I just took 45 mg of Dexedrine instead of 30 mg I was distracted at the time (v.tired and my mum was talking to me). I guess today IS the day to make sure I have my emergency med for MAOI hypertension. I hope I don't have to use it.

Thanks Phillipa, I am fine. I took some Thorazin/Largactil and my heart rate has slowed down. It was a dumb and dangerous mistake. It's always something isn't it. Sigh.

What other medications do you take? I have taken dexedrine for years and have taken more (both on accident and on purpose) and never had any problems increasing by 15 mg. And I have taken dexedrine while on a wide variety of drugs (Parnate, Zoloft, Wellbutrin).

I am just surprised that a 15 mg increase caused such a reaction.

It's because I am on a MAOI, Parnate, I have to be careful using stimulants. Most pdoc won't even let you combine the two.

I was on parnate for years with dexedrine - I know many doctors don't do it, but mine has no problem. I never had any problems even when taking more than the normal dosage. I am just surprised that at that low dosage of dexedrine you were impacted so much.

For most the problems are starting a stimulant with an MAOI; assuming there are no problems after first starting, what I understood is that the risks of taking the two were very minor. In fact, the greater risk remains the parnate and eating certain foods, not the interaction of the parnate with the stimulant.

Well, everyone is different! I think a part of it might have been psychological -"Oh no, I took too much Dexedrine whats going to happen?" Stress, stress, stress. I think that is what made my heart race more than the actual dexedrine.

How much dexedrine did you you take with your Parnate?

Generally I took 50 mg but sometimes as much as 70 mg. I take it both to enhance the impact of the anti-depressant and because of excessive fatigue. Since the fatigue has diminished a fair amount I don't need quite as much. But I have taken it for over 15 years

Was the fatigues from the Parnate? Or was it from something else? I have fatigued all the time as well as pains in my whole body (flu like pain).

Thanks for your input btw.

I had the fatigue before I started taking the parnate. The fatigue was from the depression, not the parnate. More specifically I was not sleeping and my appetite had dramatically declined. I lost about 20 pounds (or about 15% of my weight) and was exhausted from lack of sleep. I have never had the pain that you have described (from earlier posts). Other than the depression, I rarely get sick. No colds, no flu etc.

But even after getting my sleep under control and gaining the weight back (and then some), the fatigue remained, although not as intense. It is just something that won't 100% go away. I do have more anxiety now than I did years ago and I am sure that contributes.
