Anyone else tried Trileptal...

Posted by hrguru on August 31, 2010, at 0:06:34

...it saved me! I haven't posted on here in awhile, because I was in a really bad shape until recently. I was God-awful imbalanced for months on the meds I was taking, and in great need of adding a new one to the mix...Trileptal :) LOVE IT! I am stabilized now, and it is great! Now don't get me wrong. I don't think it's a "miracle drug." I did not reach a level of stability simply with the addition of this little pill (I have also completed several weeks of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for bipolar disorder- I highly recommend it!). I do credit this pill with stopping my delusional mania and mixed episodes, though. Life is just...normal. Trileptal (for me) took some getting used to. I felt drunk for 2 weeks straight. This was....odd...for someone who has been sober for over a year and a half. But that was the only real side effect I experienced- that and a couple of nights of strange, vivid dreams.

Is anyone else taking Trileptal currently? Or does anyone have any experiences with this med they'd like to share? It saved my life! I hope that it continues to work as well as it is working now.

Great to hear you are doing so well. I just took trileptal at 150mg for addition to an ad. No side effects. Stopped cause of exense. Phillipa

Yes. I would argue that the pill is indeed a miracle drug for those whom respond to it. The only thing it won't do is to live life for you. However, it will change the way you think, feel, and act to be able to live life better.

Me too.

:-)

Trileptal is growing in popularity. You just need to watch for hyponatremia (low sodium). Other than that, Trileptal has advantages over Tegretol with respect to side effects. It didn't really help me, but it didn't hurt.

----Well, to be honest, it did feel like a miracle drug when it started to stabilize me. However, I don't want to give anyone else false hope that it would do the same for them, because (a) every person is different, and (b) I was in partial-hospitalization when I first started taking it. So I was going through intensive cognitive behavioral therapy at the same time. I feel like that could have also played a role in my moods stabilizing. I can't be too sure, but I think it probably helped.

----Thank you :) It's been so long since I've been on these boards- How are you doing these days? Have you found something that works well?

> Trileptal is growing in popularity. You just need to watch for hyponatremia (low sodium). Other than that, Trileptal has advantages over Tegretol with respect to side effects. It didn't really help me, but it didn't hurt.

----Yeah, I was afraid of that low sodium side effect at first, but my doctor told me it rarely happens, and to only a small percentage of people. I also *heard* you're only at risk for hyponatremia within the first 3 months of treatment with Trileptal. Have you heard this? In any case, so far so good here :)

----I will tell you what, though. I really did feel absolutely intoxicated, hammered, wasted drunk for about the first 2 weeks straight of taking it. Zero alcohol in my system...Yet I could not drive anywhere. I had trouble walking straight, and holding a normal conversation. It was pretty awkward for awhile :) Then it just lifted. So strange! One of the weirdest side effects I've experienced. Have to say.

Hi Phillipa,

Thanks for the feedback :) Did you take Trileptal before it went generic? I don't even know how much the generic costs (it's on my insurance plan). I was just curious. I've heard the name brand is really expensive.

How are you doing these days? I haven't been on here in awhile- but I just wanted to tell you something personally. I know that a few months ago, when I used to post comments, they were often arrogant, harsh, uncalled-for, rude (you name it). Anyway, I certainly hope I didn't say anything that hurt your feelings. If I did, I'm really sorry.

I hope that you (and everyone on these boards who were around before) will give me another chance, now that I've calmed down a bit :)

Hi HRguru.

> ----Thank you :) It's been so long since I've been on these boards- How are you doing these days? Have you found something that works well?

I've gone around in a great big circle because I was not satisfied with a 35% improvement. I am currently back on Nardil. I don't expect to respond to it any better now than I did last time. Unfortunately, it is the best of the bunch for me. That being said, I am feeling better on the Nardil. I am thinking about adding agomelatine, a European antidepressant.

I really don't know what path this side effect follows. I'm glad you are doing so well at this juncture.

I have had similar experiences to drugs that have worked. For instance, with Nardil, I feel pretty weird for a few weeks before my head clears and I begin to respond to it.

Hi SLS,

I wouldn't be satisfied with a 35% improvement either. We all each deserve to be at 100%. It's hard to keep up the motivation to get there, but it sounds like you have it, and I believe you can get there!

I don't know *anything* about Nardil. All I have heard about it is that people seem to really like it, and that it works for a lot of people. You said that you are feeling better on it, but you don't expect to respond to it any better now than you did last time.

Do you think that the addition of the new European AD might help? I've found that some meds (depending on the meds) work together to produce a nice synergistic effect. Then a medication I tried before, which worked okay, ends up working even better (for me, this was true for Wellbutrin).

It sounds like you're really taking a proactive approach to your health. That's wonderful! I should be so lucky to have your level of determination :)

Hi actually I doubt that you hurt my feelings if so long forgotten. It was name brand trileptal and horribly expensive. Good to see you back feeling well. Phillipa

I agree with Phillipa. You deserve it! I've never been at 100% either (at any point in my life) but I'm still working hard to try to get there. Someday, friend- We'll get there ;)

I'm on it. It's the only mood stabiliser that works AND doesn't cause weight gain.

I am glad it worked for you.

Thanks Phillipa, but I am not back really.I am still staying at the Centre. I came home today to take my mum to a movie. They didn't want me to at the Crisis Centre because they want me to relax. But how can I leave my mom alone all this time? She gets so LONELY. I hate it. I really don't know how to balance living with her and still living for myself.

Maxie that is loving and caring. I'm sure your Mom appreciates it also. What a wonderful Daughter you are. Phillipa
