Thought I finally found the perfect fit for me!

I am not sure if anyone here would know or not about memantine. I am taking pristiq every other day (my pdoc wanted me to cut how much in half after having too much up and downs), adderall 15 mg 2x a day, vyvanse 40 mg, klonopin prn. I had some crashes on the stims before, all of them, ritalin, dexedrine, concerta, adderal awhile ago. Well this time I was at the time taking nortriptylene and tried a vyvanse, and felt great. Then my dosage was upped and I did horribly (rageful), and I was changed to pristiq. During this time I had a bad case of bronchitis and was taking cough medicine with hydrocodone, and when I stopped I started crashing on my stims. Ah, I thought, it's the hydrocodone. I told my pdoc, he told me there's nothing he could do about it, just stop the stims. Then I read about and talked to my pharmacist about what was in the cough medicine, and NMDA antagonist! It wasn't the narcotic, it was the cough suppressant! Who knew! I started taking it again every day and asked about it, read about it, they told me it was totally safe. I lost 2 lbs., my appetite lessened, I didn't want to drink alcohol, and I barely needed any klonopin anymore. WOW! Then I began reading memantine is an NMDA antagonist but can help with mood and ocd and tolerance to stims so I begged my pdoc and he finally told me yes on Friday and I began taking 5mg Friday night! Saturday wasn't as good, didn't feel as happy, more anxious, and a little snarly. I read there is some agitation which can go away, but snarliness? Where was my warm fuzzy feeling? I began to think if the side effects didn't go away quickly, I was one of the unlucky few who it just didn't work for and to go back. SO I am hoping anyone here may know more about the reasons about NMDA antagonists, will the side effects go away, will it be like my loving delsym! :) Should I give up and go back, or hang in there? I feel so down, my hopes were so high it was the answer and I hit the jackpot. At the very least, I hope my story can help some of you out there who might want to talk to there docs about these NMDA antagonists! I am so hoping the side effects go away. I also read it may also help libido ruined by ssris! Just seemed like a dream! Has anyone here taken memantine? Thank you! Cydnie

Different NMDA antagonists have different properties. DXM in cold medicine has binding to the sigma-1r receptors which can cause mood elevation / euphoria. Not all NMDA antagonists have abuse potential. DXM does has some abuse potential, but others like magnesium clearly have none.

Hard to say.
